I had no idea that they're releasing a movie next weekend based on the book "The Dark is Rising". Anyone else read that series?

And Christopher Eccleston (9th Doctor) is in it! I don't know if it'll be any good, but that part is cool.

I just saw the poster for this at the movie theater the other day. Are the books good?

I think I was in middle school when I read them, so I don't remember much, but I know I really liked them at the time. I don't know if it's a children's series or not, but I think they were somewhat dark, especially if the movie's depiction is accurate.

Sadly, the films look terrible (to me). I read this series about two years ago and liked it ok, but the preview shows that they changed it to be an American kid for no reason, and they framed it like the dopeyest YOU ARE MORE THAN WHAT YOU SEEM, YOUNG MAN! story ever. I bet you could find the long preview somewhere online.
*shrug* I hope they prove me wrong, but I'm not really excited about it. Now, the first His Dark Materials movie? I'm all over that.

Yeah, the one preview I've seen for The Golden Compass looked awesome. It makes me want to actually read the books.

I saw the preview and I thought it looked pretty good. Not like spectacular zomgtheremaknamovieouttamaifavboo3k kind of good, but y'know...good enough where I might waste an afternoon on it. I read the last book of the series when I was in either middle school or high school and I didn't understand it at all. I assume that is because I had missed most of the plot. I think for people who haven't read the book, the movie might be a fair way to spend a little bit of free time. For whatever reason I think the fantasy-adventure movie is the new throwaway action film. (Might *possibly* have something to do with the enormous gross of Harry Potter and LoTR.)

I read a bit about these awhile back, and apparently they've been hideously Jesusified because of the director.

Revised opinion after trailer: I'll probably go see this because Ian McShane is the shit. (he's Al from Deadwood, one of the best characters to appear on screen pretty much ever)
