Does anybody know why I sometimes get this symbol instead of a picture?

It's when the server fails to sent the picture, usually because the picture is missing.

Some badly configured servers do this intermittently because they limit the number of pictures they'll serve to one computer when a single page is being loaded.

Nope, it's not your pc's fault, it's a problem with the website.

(I'm 99% sure of this, there are a few other things it could be but they're in the unlikely remaining 1%).
