The body lay forgotten at the back of the room, its dull eyes staring blankly towards the gaggle of women surrounding the bar, none of whom spared it more than a glance, even though the sudden appearance of a corpse in their midst had caught everybody's attention.
"It's a jurisdictional matter," said Tracy Kibre, one of a plethora of lawyers crowding the bar, as she pushed to the front and gave her drink order to the harried looking barmaid. "We're in international space," she added, winking at the barmaid before turning to scowl at the motley collection of law enforcement officers.
"So?" Pepa Miranda did not like to be told what she could and could not do. "We're still police officers."
Kate Ashurst nodded in agreement, her cocktail momentarily put aside as she waded in to the moral and legal maze. "We have a duty to investigate," she said, pointing vaguely toward her fellow officers.
"She's right." Lindsay Boxer looked ready to cry, but whether that was due to the current situation, nobody knew. "The murder happened on our watch and we're -"
"How do we know?" Silvia Castro demanded. "The lawyers wouldn't let us examine the body," she added, sharing a look of frustration with Claire Washburn and a fuming Dana Scully. "For all we know she could have been killed hours ago."
Olivia Spencer pushed to the front of the queue and ordered a round of drinks; she would have offered an opinion on the matter at hand, but she really couldn't care less, and while the law enforcement mob were busy fighting amongst themselves, she and the rest of the FAG were free to make merry and plan their ascension into femslash deities. "Don't forget the olives," she said, smiling seductively at the barmaid.
Helen Stewart blushed and dropped three olives into Olivia's glass. "I wouldn't dare," she purred, safe in the knowledge that both she and Olivia were happily ensconced in their OTPs and wouldn't dream of straying.
Chase sniffed the air as she waited for her bottle of O Neg. "She's been dead an hour, at the most," she drawled.
"Are you sure?" asked Emily Prentiss, who was itching to solve the crime and bolster her femslash credentials.
Without bothering to answer, Chase retrieved her bottle of blood and retreated to the non-law enforcement side of the room. She was becoming bored of the FAG and their constant, non-bloodletting, arguments that led nowhere. "I want to go home," she said to Krista, flashing her fangs in a manner she knew drove her lover mad.
"You can't leave," said Lilly Rush from her position at the edge of the law enforcement circle. Chase scowled and took a step closer. "No one can leave," Lilly added, quickly taking a step back.
Sarah Connor, accompanied by her android, Cameron, pushed to the front of the non-law enforcement group. "We can't stay," she asserted. "Cameron and I have a virtual season to get to."
"You're not the only one," called Olivia Spencer.
The crowd began to grumble but just when a mutiny looked imminent, two figures emerged from a door in the back of the room, and everyone else fell silent. Alex Cabot went to stand beside her partner, Olivia Benson, in amongst the law enforcement group, while Gabrielle joined Xena in the other group.
"We have decided," said Alex, her voice slightly muffled due to the bruise slowly blossoming on her jaw, "to form a task force to investigate the murder."
"Since we have so many of you police types," interrupted Gabrielle, her split lip glistening, "we've decided to draw straws to see who is assigned to the task force."
Grumbling arouse from the police officers present but no one voiced a specific objection.
"Does that mean we can leave?" asked Natalia Rivera, hope bringing out her dimples and prompting half the room to swoon.
The steel left Alex's eyes as she turned a sympathetic look on the brunette. "I'm afraid not." She pointed over her shoulder at the corpse. "Until we find out who she is and who killed her, no one is going anywhere."
