Summary: Ruth's POV when she's sitting in court.
I never understood it. Until now. It's not something I planned on or even thought about. Not until that birthday party she threw for me. But even then it was just a glimpse of something unrecognizable. And I sit here now, everything clicking into place. That glimpse is now before me, all grown into a wonderfully painted picture. And in that picture is the girl in the pants.
I love the girl in the pants. In a time when every other woman wears beautiful dresses, she wears pants. And she is the most beautiful of all. Her soul is so kind. Just like her late brother's. Buddy. Which brings me to my own son, Buddy Jr. Oh how Idgie adores him and how he adores her. It's like she could be his own mother. But more like a father I now notice. The girl in the pants.
We all knew Idgie was different. She never took an interest in normal girl things. Dolls, boys, dresses. She liked fishing, poker, pants. We've talked of homosexuals in church, but we'd never speak of such things with people we knew. We knew that woman down at the pub was close to Idgie when she was a teenager, but again we never spoke of anything. I never spoke of anything because I didn't want Idgie to go to hell. She was too kind, too caring, too lovely to end up there.
But now I get it. I know God loves Idgie. God loves me. And I love the girl in the pants, more precisely the woman in the pants. And she's my best friend. And I love her.
