It could have gone differently, in a world that doesn’t exist.
In that other world, where the sun is still bright and the grass is still green, Spencer meets Ashley and they become friends and they fall in love and they make it when everyone says they won’t.
If it were a movie, Spencer would watch it.

‘Got a reputation for breaking in girls…’
And so it echoes off the inside of her head and careens into the empty space in her heart, the one section she reserved for the girl she loves.
And it is lodged there, mocking her when Ashley doesn’t answer her calls and when Ashley ditches her for someone new… someone male… someone older… someone other than Spencer.

They met in some class and Spencer fell hard and Ashley smiled like the world was hers.
But not Japan. Not Spain.
Just the world of desire and cluelessness… just the realm of longing and manipulation…
Spencer got stamped like a passport and Ashley traveled the land recklessly.
In that other world, Spencer brings Ashley to her knees.
In this world, Spencer is on her knees, alone.

It could have been different.
In that first kiss was a promise and it rang like a bell, clear and sharp and Spencer believed it.
And for a second, Ashley looked like she did too.
But everyone is a bad habit in need of breaking and Spencer shatters all too well and Ashley moves on to the next girl… the next guy… they next conquest… the next and the next…

If this were a movie, Spencer would close her eyes.
