Chapter 12

“I have to go to work. They have a case, I need to…work.” Doris exclaimed, breezing in to the kitchen where Emma and Ashlee were watching cartoons and Olivia was cleaning up from breakfast. The words seemed to float carelessly out of Doris’ mouth as soon as her eyes met Olivia’s body. Green eyes flashed up to take in Doris’ entrance in to the kitchen and Doris felt like she was melting under her intense gaze.

“What? No, you can’t leave…we were going to have a fun day at home!” Olivia playfully pleaded; putting down the pan she’d been scrubbing to move towards Doris.

“I need to work,” I need to get away. Doris sighed, hating that those pools of green were so smoky, and smoldering and focused solely on her.

“Why are you leaving?” Olivia’s voice fell so that only Doris could hear her.

Doris shrugged, suddenly realizing that their hands were clasped together. Olivia had grabbed her hands in an attempt to keep her there. “Listen, I’m feeling a lot better now, and I need to work. So I’m going to go. For a couple of hours.”

Olivia pushed Doris in to the other room, away from their daughter’s. A smile appeared on her face. “Hey, are you sure you’re okay?”

“I am perfectly fine, Olivia,” Doris smiled back.

“You’re sure?” Olivia’s hands crept forward, wrapping around Doris’ waist.

“I’m sure.” Doris braced herself for the suddenly inevitable kiss. Their lips met and Doris couldn’t hold back, couldn’t do anything but lose herself in the contact.

Olivia moved back from the kiss. “We should talk when you get back, all right?”

Doris nodded, knowing that they did need to talk. This thing that they had seemed to be becoming more and more serious and Doris didn’t know if she should distance herself further or let it happen. But she was trying to get Natalia and Olivia back together. Because that was what Olivia wanted…wasn’t it?

Olivia was giving her another kiss again. “All right, you go ‘work’ and I’ll be waiting here with our two lovely daughters and when you get back we’ll talk. Okay?”

“Okay.” Doris nodded.

And as she left for work she began to dread the conversation she and Olivia were about to have.

Natalia sat before the sandwich, knowing she should eat, but also finding that she was too upset to have an appetite.

Matt studied her from across the table, watching as she watched the food before her. It almost looked as if she was willing it to feed itself to her so that she wouldn’t have to put forth the effort to actually feed herself.

“You’re sure you don’t want to talk about it?” Matt’s voice was soft, concerned.

Natalia looked up, startled by the fact that another person was still sitting beside her. She quickly looked away and swallowed. “I,” her voice faltered. She tried again. “I lov…there’s someone who…” her eyes filled with fresh tears and she ducked her head.

Matt extended a Kleenex in her general direction, having grabbed some before sitting down beside her.

“Thanks.” Natalia sniffed, blowing her nose, wiping at her eyes. “There was someone who I cared about very…very deeply and…they…this person…they’re gone.” She whispered.

Matt just nodded, willing Natalia to collect herself, for she looked like she had more to say.

“And then Rafe…I…I told Rafe…about…this person and…he…he left.” Natalia whimpered, dabbing furiously at her watering eyes.

Matt leaned back in his chair barely unable to fathom the amount of loss Natalia had just endured. It sounded like she was going through a very, very shitty time. Not knowing of anything better to do, Matt extended his hand towards Natalia, clasping her hand gently in his own, holding it in a comforting gesture.

“It’s going to be all right,” Matt assured her, wondering why exactly he had thought it would be a good idea to stop in and check on Natalia and Rafe. It appeared to him that he’d just walked into a very sad moment in Natalia’s life and suddenly he felt obligated to make her feel better.

And it didn’t hurt that she was one lovely looking lady and he felt compelled to do anything, anything, to make her feel better.

Doris really needed her ‘alone time’ today, but as she sat at her office desk with papers spread out before her, her iPod loudly playing music that usually made her feel at ease and relaxed, she found that she was quite on edge. She taped her pen mercilessly against the edge of her desk, her eyes blindly staring at the page before her, her mind not registering the words on the page.

She and Olivia were going to talk. Today.

But talk about what, exactly?

What did they have to talk about?

Millions of different scenario’s raced through Doris’ mind and all she could keep thinking was that Olivia was going to tell her that she was leaving. But Olivia’s seemingly innocent, meaningless kisses were becoming more frequent and needier. But maybe it was because Olivia liked to pretend that Doris was Natalia, albeit a more open and ready and willing Natalia.

Doris needed to point this out to Olivia; she needed to let her know that she needed Natalia. She could only think about the night that Olivia had come home after Emma had run away, and how she’d watched Olivia break down right before her eyes, how she’d looked so lost and confused. She needed Natalia to pull her out of her slump, make things better…

…didn’t she?

The pen tapped roughly against the wood of her desk and she lost her grip on it. The writing utensil flew out of her hands and across her desk to the floor opposite her and it was then that she looked up and in to two dark, angry eyes.

“Hey,” Olivia grinned, leaning against the doorframe which led into an overly organized bedroom. “What are you doing in here?”

Ashlee turned, startled by the sound of Olivia’s voice. “Oh, hey. I’m trying to figure out what to wear. I have to meet with some people tomorrow at the hotel, they’re throwing an event and I can’t decide what…I want…to wear,” Ashlee had turned back to her full length mirror and was holding up two different colored shirts. Olivia watched as the girl studied both and then sighed. “Neither of these are going to look good on me.” She groaned and tossed them in the pile of already discarded clothing.

“What are you talking about? That cream colored blouse would look wonderful with that jacket…that jacket you wore…the other day, remember?” Olivia was in her room in an instant, grabbing the blouse that had just been discarded and moving towards the open closet, thumbing though it for that one jacket…

Ashlee stood to the side and watched as Olivia took over. Her mother had never done anything like this for her…and it felt surreal to have Olivia Spencer looking through her wardrobe, picking out an outfit for her.

Olivia located the elusive jacket and plucked it out of the closet, turning to hold up the ensemble.

Ashlee frowned. “But that shirt…it…it barely fits me.”

“Oh come on now.” Olivia sighed. “Try it on.”

Ashlee looked like she was going to protest but Olivia stopped her.

“Just put it on.” Olivia shoved the garments in Ashlee’s hands and pushed her towards her bathroom.

Ashlee relented and disappeared into the bathroom, only to return with a rather off-putting look on her face and the jacket buttoned completely up the front.

Olivia bit her lip. “What’s wrong?” She could see it in Ashlee’s eyes.

“I just…I’m disgusting.” Ashlee sighed, flopping down on her bed.

“What?” Olivia cried, hating that Ashlee saw herself in such a way. “Ashlee, honey, you’re beautiful.”

Ashlee rolled her eyes at Olivia.

“Hey!” Olivia sat down on the bed beside the girl, taking her hands in her own, her eyes meeting Ashlee’s, holding her gaze. “You are, Ashlee. You’re very beautiful and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.” Olivia smiled and it was hard for Ashlee to not return that smile.

She looked shyly down at her lap.

“Now, unbutton this,” Olivia unbuttoned the top three buttons on the jacket, “and we’ll add a necklace…” Olivia reached over to the bedside table and grabbed a strand of pearls that happened to be lying about. Ashlee allowed Olivia to wrap them around her neck and then Olivia smiled. “Go look.”

Ashlee slowly got up and turned to face the mirror, her fingers moving to straighten out her collar. “You’re right.”

Olivia smiled, glad to be able to assist Ashlee, make her feel better about herself.

“I told you you were beautiful.” Olivia came up behind Ashlee and gave her a quick hug from behind. “Now, how would you like to come play a card game with Emma and me?”

“Sure.” Ashlee grinned,  beginning to see that Olivia could do some good around here.

Though a sudden feeling of trepidation washed over her at the thought of her mother’s constant reminder: Olivia belonged to someone else. They shouldn’t and couldn’t hold on to her.

Doris jumped in her seat, surprised to see her rather unwelcomed guest.

“Rafe? What are you doing here?”

“You…you did that press conference.” Rafe was livid.

Doris squinted, trying to recall which press conference he was referring to.

“The ‘protect our children’ press conference. I remember now because I watched it…that…that was about my mom and Olivia. Wasn’t it?” Rafe sounded pissed off.

He knew? Doris frowned. “Hey, now…I said I wasn’t naming names then and I won’t now. That is something you need to talk about with your mother. Not me.”

“I don’t want to talk to her; I want to talk to you. You knew! Hell the whole town probably knew…or I mean knows.”

“Rafe, I’m afraid I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Mayor Wolfe, I think you know exactly what I am talking about. And from what I gather you’re on my side.”

Doris’ eyes-widened. “Excuse me?”

“I want you to talk to my mom. Just…just tell her that it’s wrong. Tell her that she needs to go back to Frank, or…or some other guy. This isn’t like her. Just…please? For me?” Rafe pleaded.

Doris could see his hurt, his pain from obviously figuring out his mother’s involvement with Olivia. He was not taking it as well as her own daughter was, and suddenly she realized just how proud she was of her daughter. But she was getting off track…Rafe now knew about his mother and Olivia and he wanted Doris to do, “what?”

“Can’t you do like another press conference and just restate your position on the issue?” Rafe ran his hand through his hair.

“I’m afraid I can’t do that Rafe.” Doris shook her head. As much as she would love to split up Olivia and Natalia further, she knew it would not be wise to get in the middle of this.

“Doris, please…”

“Rafe, go talk to your mother. I think she needs you right now, all right.”

“But it’s disgusting. It’s not natural or right or good. I just…I can’t believe my mother would do such a thing or even think about it.”

Doris looked down and took a deep breath. “Rafe, from what I hear your mother struggled with this just as much as you are now. And believe me when I say that nothing, and I mean nothing has happened between your mother and Olivia other than their acceptance of the fact that they love one another. They were waiting for you to come around, Rafe. They wanted you to be a part of their family.”

Rafe looked as if he could throw up. “What are you saying? You’re on their side now?”

“No, Rafe…”

“No, I think…I think I need to go now.”

“Rafe!” Doris called out, but it was too late. He’d already left.
