The computer will only function in C prompt mode with the one hard drive. Stupid. Oh well.

I take it you don't have a Windows install CD?

Actually we do, but it still won't work. We're not sure what the heck is going on. But figure it has to do with thrying to operate the laptop with a single hard drive rather than two. Rich found a new replacement drive for $90. We'll give that a try and see. The other bit of "huh?" is that the screen is freaking out a bit too. Not sure what would be causing that except for a failing video card. :( Any ideas? There are dashed lines running vertically on the screen (think Matrix) spaced about inch between sets of vertical lines.

So you already tried to do a Windows repair install?

As far as the screen, if the dashed lines appear from the get-go--like, even on the BIOS check screen--it's almost certainly hardware related. The culprit could be anything--bad video card, bad motherboard, bad RAM, bad power supply. Unless you happen to have a very similar, known-working machine sitting around that you can play "musical parts" with, you won't be able to tell which it is. You could try buying a replacement video card and seeing if that fixes things, but it's a gamble. I've been down that road with desktop machines before, and it's not a good road to travel. I think I ended up replacing just about everything before figuring out it was a bad motherboard that was causing the problem.

Anyway, sorry I couldn't be of more help.
