Title: The Perks of Promotion

Subaru really doesn’t want this promotion. He was quite happy in his pokey little office with his hard-working team - they did all the work, he checked it over before sending it on to the higher-ups, then he took them out for ramen and drinks and risqué chat to reward them for another job well done - it suited him just right!
It’s not like he doesn’t appreciate the pay rise. But promotion implies more responsibility, and that thought scares Subaru! He doesn’t believe his team worked hard because Subaru implemented an efficient system of rewards - they would’ve done well anyway, because they were all smart! He knew it was only a matter of time before they all got promoted over him - Sakurai-kun had already been poached by the Zoomin Company, and the other kid, Shige-kun (Subaru could never remember his surname) had been head-hunted by some news corporation.
So they were winding up his little department, and, for some reason, thought fit to promote Subaru to a more important office, upstairs. It has a glass wall so he can observe his underlings - he might be expected to pay attention to what they’re doing before it lands on his desk! Plus, they can also observe him - no more naps after lunch (or before it), no more sneaking beer in on Fridays (or Thursdays, or Mondays), no more naughty magazines, no more watching music videos on YouTube.
Subaru wonders if management are onto him. He considers handing his notice in; it’s not that much more money, and he has enough to get by for a while while he finds something else… Maybe he should take the opportunity to take that trip he’s been thinking about for ages…
He decides he should at least give it a chance. Just to make it seem like he’s willing and grateful and looking forward to a new challenge… The new department is bigger, though. What are the chances that they’ll all be braniacs like Sakurai and Shige? And if they’re not, and Subaru has to keep them in line and make them really work… then he’s screwed! Management will be down on him like a ton of bricks! He’ll be demoted to cleaning the toilets or something.
At least the cleaners only work mornings, he thinks to himself on the first day in his new position.
He makes his way to his shiny new office as surreptitiously as he can - everyone already looks very industrious, Subaru is relieved to see. They’re all very smart… neatly turned out… clean-shaven (except the guy talking enthusiastically on the phone, but that’s OK)… glasses, the one in glasses must be brainy! Oh yes, Subaru thinks as he looks around. This office will be just fine.
He gets to his own room much more cheerful than he was when he came in.
“Welcome to your new office!” says a chirpy but polite voice. Subaru turns to see another smart young man, cute as a button and about the same size, smiling brightly at him. “I’m Yasuda, your secretary!”
Secretary? Subaru must’ve missed the part about a secretary! This was a real plus! It meant as much tea as he could drink, and an extra pair of eyes to keep on the workforce and rat them out! In other words, someone to do his dirty work! How marvellous!
“Let me brief you on our department’s situation right now,” Yasuda says, business-like but kindly, and when he turns round and bends slightly to pick up some charts from the desk, Subaru can see another definite advantage to working here.
Oh yes. He thinks he'll fit right in.
