Warner Brothers...You can has brain transplant?

EDIT: There is a follow-up post to this HERE!

......

Come join the Warner Brothers, and the Warner Sister, Dot!

Apparently, Warner Bros. will no longer make movies where a woman is in the lead role.

(Thanks to troubleinchina and someone on fanthropology for posting about this.)

Warner Bros president of production Jeff Robinov has made a new decree that "We are no ( Read more... )

(And it honestly sickens me realize that I have warm and fuzzy feelings for the hollow plastic image of a company, which in reality only exists to make a profit. It doesn't love me, but I love it. It just wants my money.)

I think that's the hardest thing to accept about any company, really.

I really am hoping this turns out to be a silly hoax. But I don't think it will. Even if it's not ever admitted to, the idea of women in a leading role in the movies and on t.v. is still something that's touted as a Big Deal because it doesn't happen that often. There are various marketing factors at play here, but I think the primary one is fear.

[For every independently or uniquely marketed film, like The Blair Witch Project or My Big Fat Greek Wedding, there's a chance taken that fails. That movies that are marketed normally also fail isn't seen as relevant because there are so many that succeed.]

[Which makes me want to ramble about Snakes on a Plane, but I'll try not to do that.]

...I've been trying to write a coherent reply, but when ever I try to wrap my head around the WB's stupidity all I can think is "Gahhh!"

The reason why those movies didn't do all too well is because there was no gratuitous nudity, nor were Jodie Foster and Nicole Kidman dressed in too-tight-painted-on patent leather outfits. Plus, there were no pirates or unnecessary explosions. *sigh* I hate the movie industry these days.

Idunno, as someone who rarely watches tv (or at least, watches tv, on the tv as opposed to online), I was barely aware that these movies were coming out. They really could use better marketing.

As for the pirates/explosions comment...I know I'm generally not as interested in something if it's just a straight-up drama, or a straight-up action movie. Give me pirates, aliens, magic, time travel, or superpowered heroes or whatever, I'll be more likely to watch it. But that's just me and my sci-fi saturated brain. XD

Here via metafandom. If you read the update to the second link on the fanthropology post, it says that WB finally released a statement denying that the exec ever said that (although I doubt that's true, sadly, it's easy to believe that a studio executive would say something this idiotic and sexist), and that they don't have an official policy of ruling out women leads. So I think you're safe from a difficult boycott for now, although you raise interesting questions about how we deal with companies who make the media we love. It reminds me the LJ upheavals over the summer: what do we do when a company who provides a service we love and can't live without does something we can't bear? Something has to give; how do we decide what?

Here from metafandom. *waves*

Yeah, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you re the WB. I mean, I've considered boycotting FOX and the WB when they cancelled my shows. But I'm not that strong! I need my DC Comics shows/movies, my Buffy and Angel, etc. But I did leave a comment on their website, and hopefully enough people will protest that they'll issue an apology for their sexism.

I don't really have anything to add other than "ditto", but I wanted to say I love your icon.
