It's so interesting how each bird's playing style is so different. I had a toy for Kappa where she could clearly see the almonds in it, and she totally ignored it. However, she loooooves tearing things apart, so when I hide an almond inside a wicker ball it's just an added bonus atop the fun of tearing it apart.

If you just started using the sun lamp, keep an eye on her skin around the nares and eyes for sunburn. You may want to limit it to just a couple hours a day to start.

It's not actually a sun lamp, it's a full spectrum light designed for light therapy. Is that the same thing? Also, how can you tell if a bird has sunburn? Is it obvious -- i.e., does the skin turn red like it would in a human?

This lamp is on during the day about a foot behind and above the perch she's sitting on in that picture. It gives off a little heat, not much. I can't remember whether it was the person who sold her to me who advised me to place a lamp this way, or whether it was one of the things I read during the research period, but if anything about this set-up or its use is wrong I'd like to correct it as soon as possible. Please advise, and thank you for your comments!

I was actually thinking UV light, which I think is different from either a sunlamp or full spectrum light, though I *think* all have UV light - which is the part that causes the sunburns. Basically keep an eye on whether her skin appears pinker than usual, and if she's scratching it a lot. Birds *can* and do blush, so it can be easy to mix those two up; when in doubt, move the light back or keep it on for fewer hours. Where you describe it located is similar to where I've got it: a few inches from the cage, around a foot away from where she often sits during the day.
