Yeah, I really wanted Mark to be someone who isn't made a better, stronger person for dealing with racism. He's not really made morally superior by it, either. My own relationship with race is so complicated and so messy, I wanted make sure his was as well.

Ugh, so many issues everywhere, man.

Dude, this was such an amazing thoughtful fic - it sort of reminded me of longtime_lurker's always a girl fic (which I enjoyed very much as well)? I really enjoyed this and wish it was longer; now I'm going to have to live in this universe a little.

Thanks! Yeah, I really enjoyed her always a girl fic, too. I did want to do something similar to what she does, which is to take a look at how oppression can shape someone, even if they pretend it doesn't.

I'm glad you liked it! But I do have to say that I'm glad it's not longer, because even this much was really emotionally draining to write.
