Oh you poor babe, both of you. *hugs if wanted* I'm so sorry this happened. Just reading this makes me feel like crying. I hope you're able to forgive yourself- it was an accident and sometimes accidents hurt loved ones. Learn from them, be thankful he'll be ok and give him lots of love and try not to be too hard on yourself- no one is perfect and everybody makes mistakes.
I totally agree with the above comments. Accidents do happen. Just learn from it and move on. I think working on the floor is a great compromise-- I:m typing this on the floor, with my computer on a low table, right now. :) Hoping for a speedy recovery for your bird!
I'd feel the same way you do but everyone's right; it was an accident and you shouldn't beat yourself up over it! Thank your lucky stars that Gideon is ok and be careful it never happens again (which you've clearly already taken steps to!). And birds are really more resilient than we give them credit for. I've had to amputate a lot of finch legs in my lab (we have problems with leg bands that I seem to be the only one interested in addressing...) and they are business as usual the very next day. (right now I'm thankful that all my boys abhor being on the ground!)
Zebra finches are super feisty! They're not too bright but they sure are cute. I'm studying how mercury impacts their behavior, and how they store and filter out dietary mercury.
Oh my goodness! I feel so much for you. Muffin will often be roaming around on the floor and they move so fast. Good luck in his recovery and don't be too hard on yourself!
Thank you for the support. My tiels spend a ton of time pecking at things on the floor (if I haven't vacuumed recently they REALLY like it...) and I make sure I know where they are if they get out of my sight, but this was like so crazy fast!! Birds ahhhh
Birds ahhhh indeed! Muffin has a bold and reckless personality, and I had to learn to live with it. He enjoys going under all sorts of things too, and no matter how many times I sweep or vacuum under the one shelf, he always finds something to eat under there :S I am sure with your love and care Gideon will bounce back :-)

Your finches sound really feisty, which is great! Are you doing research on them?
