Under the door is nearly as snug as the rest of the doorway due to carpetting, but it's a thought. But yeah, I was leaning towards running the HEPA all night with the windows open too, since windows only so far hasn't had the air clearing out all that fast.
Edit: And I think once I manage to wash the smoke out of my hands I'll wake Kappa up and listen to her breathing a bit before I conclude no e-vet for sure. My asthma isn't bothering me from this at all though, so I doubt I'll need an e-vet.
If it's not too cold out at night than I'd run the filter and leave the window open to pull in fresh air. If it's cold out shut the window but keep the filter running.
For future reference positive air pressure is a big help. IF you can move the birds some where else even better. Open widows and Hepa until it seems clear.
And from recent learning experience if in any doubt take them to the vet. After our house fire on the 4th of July the birds were seeming fine, I took them to the e-vet any way along with one of the cats and the vet told me that even if they looked ok right that minute they could have the tissue in the lungs starting to swell [I would guess sort of like your asthma does] and they gave them a preventative does of Dexamethazone [sp]. And kept the birds in warm humidified oxygenated cages for the night.
