So I'm going to be moving from NJ to CA in 3 months. While I am completely excited about the move, I'm concerned about how in the hell I'll be getting my birds there ( Read more... )

I'm wanting to say that there is a tag for this in memories somewhere...Seems I remember the question being asked anyway.
Sorry...I don't know any more than that. Good luck.

Worse comes to worse they can go cargo, depending on the time of year. Delta and Continental offer shipping services for pets. I had Pickle shipped to me from FL -- he was just fine, I promise.

I would call each airline and find out what's what re: BIRDS in the cabin. You might be able to take all three abroad if you are flying with a companion. One would take the 'tiel in a cabin kennel, the other the two budgies. Or you might be able to fit two critter carriers in one cabin kennel...

Wish that I had more advice!

I just heard about a new airline that transports only pets. They've retrofitted small planes with pet enclosures instead of seats, so the animals can fly in the cabin instead of having to go cargo. (Not that you'd let your birds go cargo anyway! But folks with big dogs or multiple cats have no choice.) I'm not sure what their policies on birds are, but it might be worth looking into.

Birds seem like a future option but not yet available. They only fly around 3-4 cities atm.

I did a similar move (CA to VA) with birds and they did GREAT! If you have any questions about how we did it, feel free to ask.

I have driven across country several times with animals, it really isn't that bad. As long as the animals can see or hear you, and they have familiar objectes with them, they are ususally fine.

I would suggest you choose your route carefully though. You said 3 months - so October you are moving? The northern route (80) is beautiful because you will see a great deal of fall foliage. Middle route you will have to put up with Kansas - (the map people lie - Kansas starts at the California border and ends at West Virginia....it is, in my experience, the longest ride though state ever) - and the southern route you will have to contend with hurricane season - so that, to me, would be the biggest decision.

You will get there, and the birds will be fine.
