How to get rid of ants safely

Now that it's Spring again (in the Northern Hemisphere) and we've lots of new members lately, it's a good time to post about bird-friendly ways to get rid of ants. The method I've used for the last two years is home-made borax ant bait and poison, directions here - scroll down around 3 screens, you'll see a picture on the right of little condiment

I picture doing this for my parents... and years later when an addition is made to the house, finding this massive pile of dead ants in the wall.
