An enzymatic like Nature's Miracle will probably help with the smell and the stains and is completely bird-safe.

Buy it by the gallon, it's some of the most useful stuff in the universe. :)

There are some other brands too, Kids and Pets being one, but Nature's Miracle is what I use too.

ok i have 2 cats that like to pee on my brand new carpet.
I used a mixture of peroxide and baking soda. depending on how bad the spot is? did it penetrate the padding?

You can pour peroxide onto the stain.. this will make it "bubble up" and bring the dirty/stain/pee/poop to the surface of the carpet.
Then you do this.. Basically, mix up a bowl of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda till its really thick.. not quit a paste but kinda like oatmeal..

spread the paste on the stain and kind of rub it in.. allow it to dry and then vaccum up. i hated the part about allowing it to dry so i let it sit a while then i steam cleaned the heck out of it.. i actually got cat urine out where they had peed multiple times while i was gone for the weekend.

oh yeah, HOT HOT water helps when steam cleaning...

you can do a google search on pet urine, peroxide and the baking soda to get more details, but it works, its not toxic and it doesn't have the odors that hurt our birds.

When I had an elderly, incontinent dog as a kid, I used to use seltzer water and baking soda. The seltzer bubbles would help work the stuff out of the carpet, and the baking soda would help with odor and freshening.

If you don't mind the smell, you can use vinegar and baking soda instead. They'll foam up and get the gunk out of your carpet.

I love how what we used to make volcanos with is so utterly perfect for cleaning things instead of harsh chemicals.
