If Bennett Zon at Durham University is right, that's the subliminal message we could be taking away with us from O Come All Ye Faithful. It has some superficial plausibility, but I'd need to read the paper.

The subliminal stuff is me joking... John Francis Wade's message would have been obvious to most eighteenth-century Roman Catholics, but not necessarily to the enforcers of the law trying to break up their worship or expose them as Jacobites.
