Salma Hayek, when opening the envelopes containing this year’s Oscar nominations (about which more anon) was heard to remark “There’s so many Mexicans!” with a little squeal of delight. She’s just one person who’s noticed a rise in creativity south of the border; the best film of 2006 and the best TV series both have roots in Mexico ( Read more... )

Another friend had recommended it to me and I watched the episode with the photgrapher from the old 'hood made good. I originally dismissed the show because of its predictability ("oh look. Betty uses her knowledge of real life to connect with a prized photographer") and I really over-looked the other elements (the bullying, the image-insecurity, the conspiracy) as they were uninteresting, annoying and distracting (in that order).

I agree that it is really well written, but it just doesn't have anything that I'm interested in to keep me coming back. It also really annoyed me.

Creative Team: "We've got a show about an ugly girl who struggles in the fashion industry but will eventually succeed by keepin' it real."

Ah.... I used to wonder why French soaps were so formulaic, obviously studio-based, had laughs and yet weren't sitcoms. They were telenovellas!

I've been quite enjoying Ugly Betty, and yes, like a few other good US TV shows, it makes what we do here look like crap.
Marc is also really good at crossing his eyes in fright!

(I didn't think much of The IT Crowd though.)

thanks so much for writing this. while 'ugly betty' isn't a preference of mine, I do know that in the not-so-distant past, there's been a huge lack of representation of...oh...what are they calling us now? latinas? mexicanas? hispanics? chicanas? I don't know. I'm just me.

I look forward to the day when it's completely irrelevant: here's a show, or a film, or a book, and it's phenomenal, and brilliant, and oh, she just happens to be hispanic. or whatever.
