There are people who do not know that the release of Jarvis Cocker's first solo album (scheduled for mid-November, and titled simply Jarvis) is the cultural event of the year. Perhaps you are one of them. In that case, let me present to you this faux-karaoke clip of his download-only single, and quote the lyrics in full ( Read more... )

Hee hee, I thought that would chime well with you!

The new album is a solo record, simply called Jarvis. Wikipedia pegs it for release on 13th November 2006 - not sure how reliable that is. The song titles alone are things of wonder: 'Loss Adjuster' (parts 1 and 2), 'Fat Children', 'I Will Kill Again'...

It was remarkable seeing it being presented all along as "a historic event", as if the actual event was secondary to everyone's desire to be involved in something important. Just over a year on and absolutely nothing has changed - that's history in action, folks. Shame that the PR principle has now infected charity.

John Harris, in his book The Last Party (excellent, by the way, and a massive improvement on those rather smug columns he writes in the theguardian), laments the fact that, whereas songwriters were quick to come out against Thatcher, Blair has inspired precisely one protest song by a major band ('You and Whose Army?' by Radiohead). A shame that it's taken so long to break the apathy, but the revival of good lyricism has me feeling more optimistic about the British music scene than I've been for a long time.

When I was working for a charity earlier this year I had to write an article on MakePovertyHistory. It took a lot of willpower not to point out that it did not, in fact, make poverty history.

It sounds like I'm trying to appear wise after the event, but when I first became aware of it the phrase 'style over substance' immediately sprang to mind.

Private Eyedid a great little skit shortly after the concert had happened in which God said he had "to hand it to" Bob Geldof. "I'd been saying, 'the poor will always be with you', but this bloke goes and gets rid of them all in a year!"
