I fear that my copy of We Love Life, the best Pulp album ever according to a poll of me, may be lost forever, spirited away to whatever cold wasteland swallowed my 2 Many DJs compilation and Portishead's Dummy. The latter, I must admit, I have no desire to buy again. It's brilliant, but its continual use as background music for This Sodding ( Read more... )

Dummy is a brilliant album - one of my favorites as well.

Maybe I should just get the damn thing. You're right, it is great, I just want to stick a big sticker on my copy saying "I LIKED THIS BEFORE THE YUPPIES GOT INTO IT". I don't usually feel this possessive over music - if other people like stuff I like, I generally think that's all well and good, but This Life was such a terrible show, and it's just come out on DVD, and it used to hammer Portishead stuff all the time to underline the emotions that weren't present in the acting, direction and writing.

Phew. If I get this stressed out over it again, I'm going to remind myself that it'll be nice to buy an old CD for cheap for once, rather than buying a new release which costs more than I earn in eight months.

My usual solution to this kind of thing would just be to download the files. If you feel like mastering the intricacies of bittorrent I can give you a few pointers; otherwise I can just d/l the albums and post them to you - as audio discs or files on a CD - if you would like.

The main problem with 'pirated' audio is that there is often some loss of quality, as people do not rip to a good format or at a high enough bitrate. That's been better in recent years, however.

Hmm, maybe a quick e-mail on the intrickacies of BitTorrent might be worth firing off. It is about time I caught up with the latter half of the Twentieth Century, after all.

Fie upon your illegal activities! They come to no good!

(You want proof? How about last Sunday's viewing of Van Helsing? Proof enough.)

I never did get the praise heaped on We Love Life. I mean it's a good album, sure, but compared to the three preceeding records, it just seems a bit lacking, a bit unvaried, a bit... happy? It's not that Pulpy, I suppose. I still can't remotely recall how Minnie Timperly, Roadkill and Bob Lind go.

A pity - they're three of the best songs. I particularly love Bob Lind.

I'm not sure it is a happy album as much as it's a conciliatory one, one that accepts that life is often nasty and disappointing but worth continuing with anyway. 'The Night That Minnie Timperley Died' isn't too happy a song, is it?

Heh, I listened to the album after commenting and I still find Bob Lind utterly forgettable. I couldn't remember anything about it by the end of the album.

And nah, it's not that happy, but the sound is certainly happy, and it's happier than their other stuff (other than 'It', at least). I also really miss the keyboards.
