Now, Nonsense Isn't New To Me

I finished the 2005 Tape yesterday, causing some alterations to the January 5th 2006 entry which purported to show the tracklist. Check it out. I'm still wondering who the five artists Jim had heard of were...

After reacquainting myself with Fellini's La Dolce Vita last week at the Tyneside's Italian cinema festival, I was looking forward to ( Read more... )

I've sometimes thought that all forms of art are slightly ludicrous. But then, most things are. Take philosophy dons, who actually spend their lives writing articles that will never be read for journals that will never be bought on the most boring areas of metaphysics you could ever hope to come across.* Then there's professional sport, a prime target, where grown men get paid for kicking a ball around. Or swimming very fast.

I think most professions have this problem in one sense or another. But it's alright so long as you have a sense of humour about it.

*Some areas of metaphysics can be more deathly dull than accountancy. I speak from traumatised experience.

I believe that HL Mencken had something to say about metaphysics proving man's inhumanity to man; that it essentially only existed to bore other people. In this category I would also place fashion supplements, improvised comedy and the complete works of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

consider yourself a fortunate individual for your lack of knowledge in the area of catholicism. as a matter of fact, consider it a blessing - and yes, pun intended.

I'm what is often referred to as a recovering catholic, although 'recovering' doesn't begin to cover half of it.

I've often wondered about the phenomenon of "lapsed/recovering Catholicism". It must say something about the Church that it exerts a hold over people who haven't been members for years, something that never happens with Jews, Protestants, any other religion or denomination. I did try to raise the issue with a Catholic once, but he was in the sort of strident mood where I could have said "Catholicism is fun and cute and the Pope is the kewlest!" and he'd still have chewed my head off.
