This is so true. I went to one in Detroit recently that was five stories. FIVE! And there's one in Ann Arbor that is basically my dream idea of a bookstore. It's all high shelves and narrow alleys and it's entirely possible to get lost. Plus, it's called The Dawn Treader (from Chronicles of Narnia) and it always makes me smile.

Hmm... I might have to copy some of your list and then go to the bookstore.

McEwan might be my favourite modern novelist. If you haven't read them already, "Amsterdam", "Black Dogs", "Enduring Love" and especially "Atonement" are magnificent- the last is even better than "On Chesil Beach".
