Fuck....

My roommate's dog just ate a chocolate cookie... I just left it on my computer, and I didn't think of it, and when I came back it was gone and he was licking crumbs... I didn't even think of it when I left it there, I was just going to put a pot of water on the stove ( Read more... )

I think some of it depends on how much chocolate and how big the dog is. If you've got a 100-pound dog eating 1oz of chocolate, that's a lot different than a 10-pound dog eating the same amount.

I think the best you can do is wait it out. If he starts throwing up, acting oddly, etc., perhaps consider taking him to an after-hours vet or something?

There's an article about it here, which looks like it might be helpful to you:

What kind of dog is it? Tiny or large? My best advice is to keep an eye on him. Maybe call a vet if you're really concerned and want to have them on alert but watch him and see what happens. Sometimes dogs can pull shit like this and bounce back and sometimes it's a problem.

*crosses fingers. *hugs

He's about 25 pounds, so he's not too big. (though since the owner's never around, rachael feeds him so he's getting a little big around the middle... ) Since it's the next day and he's acting totally normal, I think he really did just bounce right back. Thank god... >.>;

So as someone who's been there, done that:

Milk chocolate is the LEAST toxic kind of chocolate for a dog. Baking (bitter sweet) and cocoa powder are the worst. Also, size (he's a corgi, right?) is important -- I'm guessing the little guys got enough weight on him to be ok.

Long story short -- chocolate is bad cuz it makes their heartbeat irregular. First sign of toxic dose will be hyperactivity, followed by vomiting/diahrrea. If the second two start, I'd say take him to the vet IMMEDIATELY so they can start him on fluids/monitor his heart.

One cookie though? Keep him drinking and keep an eye on him. I think you'll be fine. *hugs* good luck, sweetie.

Okay, thanks... He ate a cookie from a batch that had about a 3/4 cup of straight cocoa powder in it... He's a corgi, so he's got about 25 pounds on him, and so far he seems absolutely fine. (RELIEF) People came over and he went BALLISTIC, but that could've been excitement as much as the hyperactivity...
Thanks for the info, though... I'll store it all away in case it happens again (I hope not...) He seemed fine, but I wasn't the one who walked him, though Alex didn't mention him having any diarrhea...

I dodged the bullet! *so glad she didn't kill the dog*

I'd keep an eye on him for another day or two, just to be sure. Is he eating and drinking normally? [I know, right? I read that and looked at my dog and was like, "Hyperactivity? How would I TELL?"]

*hughughug* I'm glad he's ok. But yeah. he's got a lot of heft for a litte guy, and 3/4 of a cup of cocoa powder divided between... 12, 16 cookies? I'm guessing he's dandy.

Silly puppies, huh?

I'll definitely keep an eye on him, just in case. So far he seems to be eating fine (he loves food so much that sometimes he chokes on it because he eats so fast... then keeps eating... >.>) and his water bowl was empty this morning...
Hyperactivity is hard to tell with our dogs, it seems. xD He got so excited when people came over that he flung himself at them, then took out his excitement on an empty milk jug and basically killed it to the point where it's kind of scary. Then he played rope and curled up on my friend's lap and drooled up a storm. xD So he seems fine? That's kind of normal for him, but I'm keeping watch just in case. If I killed a dog by letting him eat my cookie, (especially since it was my cocoa.. >.>) I would be devastated... even one as dumb as Bebop...
Silly indeeeed.

I'm pretty sure that unless he ate like, a dozen of them, the worst he'll get is diarrhea.
