Jongkook isn't brave. He doesn't even think he's very effective, but he does what he has to do to get the job done. He's never been much for teamwork, but meeting Sejoon changed everything. Instead of taking it all on his own shoulders, he can share his burden.
They sneak into places, steal things, and then sneak out again. This wasn't what Jongkook had in mind when he was asked what he wanted to do with his future. It doesn't matter, he supposes, because it's what he does now.
Sejoon, clad all in black like Jongkook, stands in the middle of the room. He looks around, then over at Jongkook. He tilts his head, just slightly, and Jongkook, slips through the laser grid until he meets Sejoon. They stand, facing each other, Jongkook pressed up against Sejoon. His partner. His boyfriend.
Jongkook leans in, pressing his mouth against Sejoon. Their kiss lasts a moment, then two, before they pull apart. After that, it's all business. In and out without alerting the authorities. They do this every few days, sometimes they take vacations, sometimes they work straight for months at a time. They've been doing it together for two years, they've been doing it apart even longer.
Sometimes Jongkook wants to stop. He wants for them to retire and move somewhere far away from cities and buildings with stealable things. But he's not brave enough to tell Sejoon as much. Or he doesn't think he is and then one of their jobs goes horribly wrong. Sejoon gets shot, not fatally, but Jongkook has to take him to the hospital.
He's never lied so much in his life, not even when his parents ask what he does for a living or who Sejoon is to him. As he waits, in the hospital, before he knows that Sejoon will be fine, Jongkook worries. He finds himself thinking about the past two years, about how much fun they've had, how much money they've made. He knows it's time.
The nurse finally finds him, telling him Sejoon will live. She takes him to Sejoon room and Jongkook sits there, planning out his grand speech. But then Sejoon awakes and everything flees Jongkook's mind. He kisses his boyfriend, telling him how much he loves him. He says nothing until they discharge Sejoon.
"We should stop." He says quietly, one night when they've turned down another job because Sejoon isn't fully healed yet.
Sejoon looks at him.
Jongkook swallows his fears. "I couldn't live if something happened to you." He half-whispers.
He expects Sejoon to protest, to fight him on this, but he doesn't. Instead, Sejoon bridges the tiny distance between them and his mouth finds Jongkook's. His kiss tells him everything he needs to know. They make plans, they make their goodbyes, and then they leave.
