When I told the secretary my name I couldn’t believe that I had ended up here, in this big studio, with pictures of actors on the wall. I had learned my text but if I knew that it would be this big, I would have prepared myself better. Dressed better. Maybe I would have had a haircut.

Most auditions took place in dark little rooms in a suburb, but this…man, this was major. Why did they invite me? How did they know my name? I was an actor, but I played in hipster webseries and once, I did this thing in theatre. Maybe the people in charge liked my picture. Or saw me on the net or something.

It was intimidating, the building. The secretary brought me to a waiting room with a coffee machine and told me to wait. I looked around in the room and nodded to the other guys. I knew some faces from previous castings, we were all fishing in the same pond. No one talked.

I had to be patient, because I was the last one to do the audition. A woman brought me to a room where two men were sitting behind a table. They introduced themselves as Tony and Jeremy and asked me to tell something about myself.

I decided to be honest. “I’m a little overwhelmed here”, I said and looked around. “Can I ask one question before we start? Why me?”.

The dark haired man behind the table smirked. “You will be fitting in perfectly Luke. We are going to be honest. Do you watch “Nothing but trouble?”.

I didn’t even have a TV, so this could be the end of my audition. If I had known that this casting was for that show, I would have looked on Youtube till the break of dawn, but I hadn’t.

“I am going to be honest too, no. I didn’t know this afternoon would be for that show. If I had known, I would be have been prepared. I am sorry”.

The blond guy behind the table smirked as well. “We didn’t tell the actors that it would be for this show because we wanted to see the raw actors, if you know what I mean. If you had known, you would be all dressed up and shaven, now we can get a picture of the person that you are.

And I have to say, I like you a lot. I have seen your work on the internet and I knew you would fit in perfectly. We make a soap in and around a hospital. One of our doctors is going to become gay. We are searching for his boyfriend this afternoon. Do you mind to play a gay man?”.

I had no idea if I did, I had never played a gay man before. How would it affect my career if I did? I knew series with gay characters were a hit, but what if I didn’t get a job after this because I …..

I shook my head. “Can I do the audition first before I am going to think about that? I get nervous being here in this hip surrounding, picturing myself in a soap. I want to concentrate on my text. Is that okay with you?”.

They were, and I closed my eyes to be able to concentrate. I crawled into the head of the person I was playing, trying to forget the world around me. When I was finished, I sat down on one of the chairs and exhaled.

Both men behind the table looked at me with their mouth agape. Slowly they started to clap their hands. Guess they liked what they saw. It made me a little shy and uncomfortable.

“Well, Luke, this was brilliant. I knew you were a good actor, but this…

We are going to discuss all the auditions, so we will call you as soon as we know who’s going to be the one, but I hope you understand that we really, really liked your performance”.

Was he hitting on me, that blond man? It hadn’t been that good. If they were going to chose me, I had to keep him at arm length. Maybe he was looking for a piece of ass. I wasn’t going to be his wet dream. He wasn’t my type.
