I- I thought I was alone in loving this movie. This cartoon is my childhood and one of the reasons (as many) I love animals so much. (I only read the book much much later). I think this character, as silly as it may sound, is one of the role model of my life also because she reminds me a lot of my mother.
Oh, no, you're not alone! I do think that The Secret Of NIMH has become a bit of a niche movie, but I think that's mostly because Don Bluth isn't the Disney corporation, and Disney really is the 400-pound gorilla of the animation market. (Also, Bluth's work is much more hit-and-miss than Disney's -- The Secret Of NIMH and Anastasia were pretty good, but he's also produced some enormous clunkers.) I also suspect that parents may be a bit reluctant to show it to their kids, since the story is dark and the artwork is kind of weird. Compare it to, say Toy Story 3, which is another fabulous movie, but which looks fluffier on the outside than NIMH does.
But NIMH does appear to have quite a legion of fans, a lot of whom are the people who saw the movie as kids in the 1980s and recognized it as the great story that it is. Mrs. Brisby is a fantastic role model, and a better all-around character than a lot of Disney offerings, male or female.
