Hmmm....I went to look for Dominic's Chinese teacher just now to make some noise about the Show and Tell. The Chinese Teacher is a relief teacher cos the actual teacher has gone overseas for further study. In summary ( Read more... )

"... they seem to think that it is my job to teach my son and get him prepared..." I think these days, the curriculum or school program somehow is targetted at getting parents to do more school work with the kids.

If I were you, I will sit with Dominic, draft out the 5 sentences with him and then get him to practice. There is no other choice. Although, it is only 4%, I think it is more important to do a good job out of it.

Ethan also always doesn't pay attention in class and tells the teacher that "mummy will teach me". The funny thing is...he retains more info from the teacher than from me. Sometimes, they are listening even though their eyes are not on the teacher.

Lastly, I DO NOT care whether people think I am a kiasi or kiasu parent. Ethan belongs to the "need help" group.

That is what I planned to do anyway and I am not so concerned about the Show and Tell cos I think Dominic should do ok. Just that I can't stand the way the school handled it.

How can Ethan be in the 'need help' group? Thought his Chinese is very strong?

Ethan has a general learning disability problem... especially in picking up oral skills. He just don't seem to attempt to think - I don't know why. He is not the kind who can be left alone for whatever tests. This is also the reason why I need to send him for all those speeches and stuff...to get him to memorise sentences so that it become more second nature.

He had his English Oral on Monday. His teacher asked him why he chose Zhiyang as his bestfriend. He said, "Because he trusts me to the hall." *faint*

omg!! i am so going to be in trouble next year with gabe :( with this kind of attitude from the teachers...God help me...

not all parents know the language...they have to understand that. can the principal do something about that department? can they not do the same as the english department? sounds like the chinese teachers are just bunch of lazy teachers!

You may not have the same problem. Gabe is going to a SAP school, isn't he? Not all teachers are like that, I believe.

You'll be surprised its quite common. Most of the teaching these days are done by parents or kids being sent for enrichment courses! Of course there are some kids who can abosrb and pay attn in class. But generally, its back to parents!

No, the plastic bag fetish teacher has gone overseas for further studies. My neighbour is quite distressed over the late notice and will probably complain to the Principal after the Show and Tell. She is afraid her son will kena marked if she complained now. :-O

S&T for both English & Chinese is commonplace these days. Important to teach your son to hv it in concise sentences so he doesn't stumble. Oh, and even tho short sentences, must put in 1 or 2 "power words/phrases" so can get "extra" points, but must make sure he can explain them if teacher asks.

By P2, this show & tell evolves into an oral presentation (like speech). Some kids use powerpoint too since some schools teach how in Pri 2!!!!
