Hanukkah Is in the Holiday Season, Too

There are many more winter holidays than X-mas and you never know when you are talking to someone who doesn't celebrate X-mas.

hanukkah, holidays, news

Mithras is the reason for the season

Have a joyous Saturnalia

Then there's New Year's, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, Yule, Solstice, all of Advent, St Stephen's Day, Monkey Day (Dec 14), Saint Nicholas Day and even Christmas Eve is considered a separate holiday by some.

Yep and also: HumanLight (23rd), Ninja Day (5th), Sinterklaas (5th or 6th), Father's Day (5th, Thailand), Independence Day (6th, Finland), and Festivus (23rd). Then, there are the awareness holidays: Human Rights Day (10th), World AIDS Day (1st), and Pearl Harbor Day (7th). There's just a ton of fun things to celebrate in December. Also, tons of opportunities to have parties and learn about other cultures.

I wish it was more common for people to have parties for minority holidays and be open about them. But, lately I've seen a ton of hostility to even saying Happy Holidays or talking about another holiday. One of the graduate students in my department is Jewish and she was given a lecture for talking about her Hanukkah plans.

My lab celebrated Sinterklaas this year because of all the Dutch exchange students. :-)

A lecture for discussing Hanukkah plans? That's so wrong.

And I have one friend who is a little *too* open about what he does on some minority holidays. Thank goodness he doesn't post picts.

That's cool. (Sinterklaas)

And I have one friend who is a little *too* open about what he does on some minority holidays.

Okay...now that has me wondering...probably not a good thing right now.
