It's ridiculous that they won't even provide abortion services to save a woman's life, but that's the attitude of Catholics. I had a very good friend in high school who was a not-very-devout Catholic, but who very much believed in the church's rules on birth control. He and another friend of mine got into a nasty argument once where she claimed she was against abortion except in cases of rape or when the mother's life was in danger, and he maintained that even then it was wrong, and that the mother should be prepared to give up her life instead of kill her child (very easy for a man to say something like that).
Of course, this completely ignores things like ectopic pregnancies where the fetus is going to die anyway - and the choice comes down to letting the fetus die or letting both mother and fetus die. Seems like a straight-forward choice to me, because who wouldn't pick the one that results in the least loss of life, but Catholicism is a fundamentally misogynistic religion. The Catholic Church totally loses any points it gained

Well, I wouldn't have much regard for the not-very-devout Catholic. One of my other strong beliefs on morality is that it is immoral of a man, who will never be pregnant or know motherhood, to have any say in women's reproductive decisions. A woman can ask her husband/boyfriend/etc for input, but it is her choice and he cannot impose his opinion over her body. I also strongly object to a bunch of old, rich, white male politicians making decisions that will affect underage, poor, minority women. It just smaches too close to oppression and sexism to me.
That is one major plus for the current Pope. I was worried that we were going to have more issues with teaching authentic biology with this new Pope, but he's taken the high road on that issue at least.
