Never specifically mentioned, but implicit in the article, is the notion that a dog can conceive of death, or rather, an end to life. That is a startling idea. I have read previously that the human brain seems to be ill equipped to contemplate its own non-existence which may be why afterlife myths are so pervasive throughout history. Does a dog really recognize that it can put an end to itself? That it can cease to be? Does a dog expect heaven? The universe is a strange place.
