Zero Odds
The damn phone call was over. Charlie got up from the couch at David’s apartment as the other man hung up and let the device rest on the nearby table. He waited, rubbing his palms nervously, but nothing came out of David’s mouth.
“So?” Charlie ended up asking. He needed the answer right now. “What did he say?”
His lover’s lips opened to take in some air before he spoke. “Not much. He… he laughed first, but then he started… getting the idea. Then he wanted to hung up,” David muttered, rubbing the back of his head. “I think he wants it to be a bad joke.”
“Can you blame him?” Charlie snapped, shaking his head. His tone of voice was a mix of irony, anger and nervousness. “C’mon, David. Come here, sit down.” Taking a deep breath, David did what he’d been told. He sat down in front of Charlie and stared at the coffee table like he couldn’t offer any solution to this. Watching him was pure agony, and Charlie felt guilty for bringing this situation into their lives. “I should have been the one to tell him. This is all my fault.”
David looked up, entwining his fingers. “It’s not your fault, Charlie. None of us could have known something like this would happen.” He leaned his back on the couch, looking at the ceiling. “What are the odds?”
“Zero. Absolute… zero.” Charlie responded, folding his arms. He started walking around the room. He really should have been the one to pick up the call and tell Don that his brother was going to have a child like this. David had enough trouble already dealing with the situation.
“You think this is wrong?”
The question startled Charlie. Frowning, he turned to his lover, noticing the hopeless look on his face. The worst part was that he didn’t know what to say. “David… I don’t have an answer. All I can think of is how the hell we’re gonna get through this. There’s no equation that can help me come up with a way to fix it. It’s completely impossible.”
There was deep silence in the room. David looked down at the floor as his body languidly lay on the couch. “I’m aware of that. But we care about each other… don’t we?”
So that was what worried him. Losing Charlie and probably freaking out himself. “Of course we do, David. How can you even ask that?” Charlie said with honesty, and he went to sit down beside his lover. He reached for David’s hand and kissed it. “I’m sorry, but I love you.”
David smiled in response. Slowly, his hand reached down his belly and caressed it. “I think our boy knows.”
“I’m sure he does… but there’s something...” Charlie didn’t want to be the one to tell such a thing. He knew that this was his son and he was glad that David was the person to bring him into the world, but they were details he couldn’t ignore. To him, kid with two daddies would have enough trouble going to school and dealing with the fact that things were different in other families. No matter how much he and David loved him and loved each other, the fear that their child wouldn’t understand or would get hurt by those who didn’t get his situation made Charlie consider the possibilities. There was one decision David and he could make - it could be for either good or bad, but at this point, Charlie really didn’t know what to do. “There’s something…”
“What?” David whispered, caressing the other man’s hand, encouraging him to go on.
“I don’t know if he’ll be able to take it… What about… adoption?” Charlie’s heart broke as he spoke.
“A lie?”
Charlie swallowed. “He can’t know the truth.”
They locked eyes, breathing heavily at the meaning of that option, but David’s eyes soon left Charlie’s and landed on his own belly. He looked down at the place where the new, little person was, and nodded. “He’ll never know.”
The End.
