Part 8
Colby thought that if he had Dwayne’s friendship, he could somehow survive all the craziness that surrounded him.
The real situation finally hit him one day.
When their Humvee exploded near the building his team had taken as an operations base, he was saved by Dwayne. The explosion was followed by hundreds of shots, and even if both of them and the other soldiers went to cover themselves, Colby knew people were being killed. Survivors yelled in desperation, sometimes giving orders, randomly firing to invisible targets, trying to make themselves bear the pain that was reaching their confused brains.
But eventually, it all went very quiet again.
When Colby got on his feet and looked at the state of the area, he froze at the sight of the dead victims’ bodies, sprawled on the dry, damaged earth. There were innocent people; there were some soldiers, too.
He lost all his energy and fell onto the ground, on his knees. His rifle was hanging on one side of his body, without a bullet left.
This time, the attack had been really well planned. And he had responded without thinking about the consequences.
He couldn’t stay longer. War was over for him.
