[ Or what.

It's the inevitable unspoken reply, obvious in the way Giovanni looks at him, all too wry and all too knowing and all too tired of his empty threats, his neverending misguided belief that he has any control over anything when it comes to Giovanni. Maybe once (only maybe, because he's still here, and that's not the way Heine planned at all, is it?) but not now. Not for a long time. He doesn't honestly think this will work, does he? Not when his biggest weakness is hanging off his arm, holding onto him as tightly as Lily no doubt used to ( ... )

[(Ha ha ha, and so you let him drive the nail in. She'll be your cross if you keep this up.)

Silence. Silence so loud that it's quieter than nonexistence; that the sound of the gunshot still rings out in his ears after the initial sharp burn has numbed through and he feels liquid start to drip its way down the skin of his arm. It echos, taunting, shredding nerves and control, the smell of the gunpowder that ignited inside the cartridge to drive the bullet into its target, influencing all effects further.

Call it a hunch that Heine believes Giovanni not to be stupid enough to shoot Nill, because without her he has nothing. Because Nill is a wildcard opportunity and would be for many more times to come if Giovanni feels the desire to use her. So, call it just a hunch that killing Nill, at least in this second isn't what Giovanni is after as far as Heine is concerned. Call that hunch the reason why he doesn't even flinch when the metal pierces his arm, cold burning steel embedding in to shatter bone (if only that was its only purpose ( ... )

[She's never seen him, heard him, like this before. It's always been stories, mostly from Badou's rambles (he can be fucking crazy, you know that, right?), but never up close, never this close. And when Badou told all the stories, she's never believed him, not even once, figured it was all just an exaggeration, but it's not like she really knew better back then. But this situation is different. There's no Badou to lighten up the situation; just the cold, harsh reality that it's still Heine right in front of her. Different, yeah, she knows it, but it's still him, right, no doubt about it -

(now you're afraid of me)

- and she remembers that, even from so long ago. She remembers what was said - you're a monster - and she remembers Heine agreeing without even blinking, without thinking twice about it. And she also remembers what she did, when those words came out of Heine's mouth: she shook her head. Even right now, when she should be, she isn't scared one bit, but it's shaky when she nods once before taking her place behind him ( ... )

[ This is probably a matter of courtesy.

To an extent, Naoto knows what it's like to hate someone so much you swear your gut will start rotting away from the inside. She knows what it's like to want to be rid of that person, because if you keep them around, if you let them stay alive, they'll haunt you in the deepest, darkest corners of your mind, always reminding you of how easy it is to buckle, to fall. And maybe that's part of the reason why she freezes when she catches sight of Heine and Giovanni, fingers wrapped tight around the hilt of her katana, the knuckles bleeding white underneath the dark leather of her gloves.

( Heine -- )

She's seen this before. She knows this scene, knows how it all plays out, and it's not until her eyes are falling to that tiny blonde figure close to Heine that she realizes Nill is there, Nill is there, Nill is there, that single phrase repeating like a whispered mantra over and over in her head ( ... )

[ Well. It's getting a little crowded, now, and Giovanni hadn't been expecting that. He's sort of aware of it on the periphery of his vision, an approaching shape homing in on Nill, and normally that'd be something of a bother, but not this time. This time that's fine, that's not something that concerns him too deeply at its core, because she's not here to distract Heine, and that's really all he cares about. As long as he has Heine's full attention ( ... )
