[Call it an overwhelming feeling of obligation. There were a lot of technicalities (if, ands, buts) but Connor didn't pay attention to those. He wasn't weighing scales on a life for a life, if he and Wright were even on this or not. The truth was, Connor simply believe he valued life (his own as much as others, no matter what Wright wanted to fling around as insults) more than anyone.

And, maybe, just maybe, he did.

That was only strengthened by a near death experience to save the life of one who, in the end, had supposedly given theirs afterall to save his own.

So, it was an obligation. It was also a matter of morals: leaving Wright meant he was making exceptions to his values over words being exchanged. The last thing he needed to do was become a hypocrite for the Resistance to follow suit.

Then, there was Kyle. But, well. That was just a different story all together. Didn't matter right now, anyway. Kyle was just another reason, but he was not (for once) a decisive factor with his involvement in John Connor's decision making.] ( ... )

[ Connor's already got the road, so Kyle takes a quick survey of the desert around them, spying for landmarks, checking the horizon. They'd tried to bury Marcus somewhere remote; somewhere he wasn't likely to be stumbled upon by either humans or machines.

Nothing that an HK couldn't reach in about ten minutes, though, but that was given. ]

...Sir.

[ He still doesn't really know how to speak to him, even address him. ]

Do you know-- how he could be--?

There's always something. I guess we should have expected it, since he seems to be the only one of his kind. That would make him a hell of a lot less expendable, right?

[He glances up briefly in his rearview mirror, adjusting the shield glasses covering his eyes; checking, too, the road behind just for the hell of it out of habit of doing things alone so often (willingly or unwillingly).]

[A bit more quietly, enough that it does start to blend in with the sound of the truck's motor, but not to the point where it can't be heard.] We'll find out, though, won't we.

[Then his focus is back on the road. For the first time in a while, John finds himself thinking what he wouldn't give to see a goddamn piece of green stretch in this wasted hell.

Too bad the chance to have stopped things from happening as they are is long gone.]

So, [he starts after a minute or two of silence] just how thickheaded is he and how fast is he going to drag his ass off and away, do you think?

[ Kyle rubs his forehead, mussing dark hair out of the way. He remembers green-- might be one of the youngest people on the planet who did see the bombs fall on Judgment Day, and hide in the tunnels while everything above him, everything he'd known turned to ash. The grass, the trees, his mother's bones.

He'd grown up in this wreckage. Watched his brother shoot the last deer hiding in the remnants of Griffith Park. Wept and later lost him too, and a father, and mostly everyone else. There is Star, and for a few days there was Marcus, and now...

It's funny but he can exactly answer Connor's question and even see Marcus's course in his mind. ]

That's the gravesite.

[ The barren foothills just a few miles up ahead. ]

He's going north over hot bedrock. No shoes. We hit the 14 up there and we'll cut across him in ten minutes.

[ He looks out the window, sees the black speck coming over the low mountains. ]

...If we get to him first.
