It had started out as trying to hide, even though what he'd been hiding had already been seen by anyone else within residence for the past five days, but still. When he'd first woken up, and actually saw what the cause of that enormous pain in his shoulder was, hiding felt like the only thing to do. Because . . . it was frightening, wasn't it? Ironic how much he believed it otherwise before ( ... )

"I'm freaked out plenty," Kunsel assured, "but I'm sure that'll pass as soon as it stops hurting you."

He smiled encouragingly at that, though his expression was more than a little strained. He knew well enough what Zack was getting at, knew his friend enough that he had some idea of what was going through the other's mind. It made his heart ache deeply to hear how Zack felt about himself, because while he knew a little of what his friend was thinking, he honestly he didn't understand in the least. If Zack had made the wing comparison aloud to Kunsel, Kunsel would have likely just stared at him because what it implied went against the one thing Kunsel had ever really been sure of in his life. Zack was his anchor, his safe harbor. Zack was an utterly stupid, idiotically good person. He wasn't just a good guy, he was good to a fault. Zack was the only thing that had kept Kunsel's optimism alive all these years ( ... )

Well, at least Kunsel was admitting it, even though he was still hiding most of it with a smile. But, with Kunsel, Zack figured that was about as good as it was going to get. He wanted to tell his friend that he didn't have to pretend, smiling wasn't going to suddenly rid himself of the hurt and that accursed black mess on his back ( ... )

"Wouldn't do a thing to hurt you, babe," Kunsel murmured, very carefully encircling Zack's waist with one arm even as he kept his hand clasped over Zack's own. He motioned for Zack to lean his head on his shoulder, trying to offer as much body heat as he could with what little contact he could make with Zack without hurting him. T ache in his heart was slowly becoming a constant throb that felt as real and physical as the Geostigma hidden by the fabric of his shirt. It wasn't just any monster that had done this to Zack. By now Kunsel was sure of it. Whatever had done this had done so much more than hurt Zack in body. The wounds Zack had sustained, even the broken bones, with time it would all steadily heal until Zack was good as new ( ... )

Strange how a nickname like that made him feel a little better. Zack managed just a little smile as he was drawn into the embrace, leaning comfortably - as comfortably as one could while sustaining such injuries - against Kunsel, his eyes drifting shut once his head rested on the other's shoulder. His legs protested as he moved closer, but he needed that warmth, even the warmth that just holding his hand provided. Zack didn't think he was shivering before, but now it was more obvious as he curled up as close as he could without crawling into Kunsel's lap ( ... )
