Upon hearing the sound of her husband's voice, Shera turned from the bathroom mirror and returned to the main room. Her hands were held to her chest, one absently rubbing the back of the other almost in agitation. She opened her mouth as though to say something, then faltered. It made her grimace at herself before she shook her head, trying to somehow find her voice.

"Cid, I--" she managed to choke out before her voice failed her once more. She wasn't sure how long she had spent in front of the mirror, trying to find traces of the Geostigma that had once nearly claimed her life. Her skin was smooth, unmarred, as though the disease had never been and yet-- That voice. There was no way she had imagined it, not with how clear and vivid it had been. But what did that mean...? For her, for them, for the family she wanted so badly? She had listened to enough to Cid's conversations with Cloud and them to know the implications. If the disease was not truly gone, then what would it do to an infant in her womb ( ... )

Watching as she appeared from the bathroom, he furrowed his brow in worry, able to tell that something was wrong. He knew what was worrying her, and hell, it was worrying him too, but it didn't make it any easier to watch her falter.
After only two puffs off of the cigarette, he moved forward to the nearby ashtray to stomp the butt out and turned to face her again. His usually gruff tone softened slightly as he tried to ask what was wrong. When it came to most things, he was a man of action, one who didn't hesitate.

But when it came to this, he was lost.

When she stumbled forward, he hesitated a moment before putting his arms around her, rubbing her back. What was he supposed to do?

"Ah hell, Shera..." he sighed, talking marginally quieter than usual. "It'll be alright."

"I wanted a family with you, Cid," Shera whispered in response, forcing herself to accept the past tense. What she wanted was irrelevant now, and she finally saw that. She couldn't keep being selfish as she had been all this time. Her eyes were finally opened to the sheer depth of what could go wrong. There was something fundamentally wrong in her, and there was something fundamentally wrong with the whole of the world. How could she flippantly bring a child into this, no matter how ready she felt? Shutting her eyes, Shera reminded herself to be grateful. She held Cid a little tighter for it, knowing that no matter what did or did not happen, she would always have him for a husband ( ... )

Cid sighed again and tilted his head back to watch the ceiling as she confessed, trying to avoid seeing her expression. Hearing her voice like that was bad enough for him. She hadn't faltered or hesitated, or sounded so unsure, for years, and hearing her go back to that now ( ... )

"Cid--And just like that, Shera had her breath stolen away. She met his gaze, her own expression completely shell-shocked in the face of his conviction, his reassurance. In that moment, she found herself overwhelmingly comforted by him. Not because she believed for a second that the Geostigma would simply leave her and her hypothetical children be, or that a solution as simple as finding something and beating it to a pulp would settle matters. Not because she was any less worried that Cid might not come home from this one, nor was she any less afraid of what was to come ( ... )
