Huh, I don't know about the two other authors, but I've always thought Mercedes Lackey was sort of cheesy XD I remember a lot of deaths or non-deaths, reincarnation, gay characters who were really pretty, and... stuff. Cheesy stuff. Mmm. Cheese. But then my tastes seem to run along Tolkein/Beagle stuff or towards Pratchett stuff, like hardcore fantasy that's more like history or really light hearted fantasy that's practically a parody. xD

I didn't read the NY Times article about Game of Thrones, but saw a tweet saying because of the article the tweeters women's reading group is now reading the book.
Such stereotypes -- ah...women love epic fantasy stories, too. I have no idea where they got their facts from!

Re the epic fantasy, I always thought all types of fantasy were sneered at by hard SF fans for being predominantly female. :) Even at the epic, military end of the genre, there are plenty of women authors and women who read it. But I could be wrong, I don't have any actual figures, just my gut feeling.
