I'm not certain scientific terms can be applied in this situation; it dabbles more on the realm of magic. However, I suppose I can indulge.

The heart of a strong-willed person is devoured by a Heartless, a small black creature from the darkness that feeds on hearts. The body left behind, hollow and empty, retains life, acting of its own accord. That is a Nobody.

No pulse but still breathing, I assure you.
