Immediately after her immunization, Yuffie had just walked as far as she could. Needing to take a break. That's what she thought it was. She needed to stop with the acting for just a little minute and have a cry.

So she did, under a huge tree in the park, feeling cold and alone and that worked for then. When the tears dried up, she wiped away the evidence on her face and pulled herself to her feet. She'd heard Aerith's voice on the NOC, she'd been aware that the woman was out somewhere. She hadn't expected to turn and walk for a few moments and then see her.

Seeing her on the carousel, Yuffie managed a small smile, walking slowly towards the woman and the machine. "Hey," there wasn't too much energy in her voice, but Yuffie knew she didn't need to put on too good a show for Aerith. "Doesn't it work?"

There was a familiar voice, and Aerith offered a small smile for the ninja. "I guess not," she replied, fingers curling into the ragged mane of her current stallion. "Like everything else around here, but with some attention I'm sure it could run again someday." She could always speak with high hopes for something that looked impossible. On the other hand, Aerith knew next to nothing about engineering and the inner workings of a carousel. For all she knew, the wiring could have been long since torn apart.

Her lips pressed together for a long moment, the air heavy on her shoulders and pulling the smile from her face. "Yuffie," she began, but her voice cracked and she cleared her throat to try again. "Ah, Yuffie? You haven't seen Cloud around, have you?" She could have been wrong. Maybe he was just out and about, assuring their safety or just being himself. "And Tifa... I haven't been able to talk to her." And she had no idea what she would say to her if she had the chance.

Yuffie pulled herself up onto the platform, her head bowed slightly as she meandered along the unsteady platform, her hands brushing what she supposed was another horse, it looked more like a twisted giraffe. "Tifa's in her room. She doesn't really come out much, except when she's working." Tifa had taken it all so very hard, and Yuffie couldn't say she faulted her. Marlene was like a daughter to her.

"I haven't heard Cloud in a while, but he's probably out, checking out the monsters and stuff." She had to believe that herself, because if she didn't, he'd left them and that wasn't good.

"Y'know, I bet it just needs some grease, and paint and a little kick start." What Aerith knew about engineering, Yuffie knew less. But then, Yuffie thought she knew more than she knew anyway. "I think we could fix it. Y'know? For..." For Marlene to play on.

Damn.

Tifa had her worried the most. She wasn't speaking very much, and when she did it was flat and lifeless. Aerith couldn't stand to watch her friend spiral down like this, with no will to take the hands reaching out for her. Her head lowered at the thought, eyes on her boots as she tapped her heels against the side of the horse. They all lived together and yet there was absolutely nothing she could do to bring her out of her dark corner anymore ( ... )

Aerith looked up toward the sound of approaching footsteps, her usual smile lifting the corners of her lips at who it was. He was a sight for sore, sore eyes. "I didn't know either," she spoke softly, keeping her gaze on him though she had firmly rooted herself to the back of the horse. It was hard to admit she couldn't find the words to say to him, especially since she had practiced in her head what the right scenario would be. But now. Now she was content with only watching him as he stood there, looking the same as he always had ( ... )

She failed to notice the physical contact until his hand replaced the course mane between her fingers, and it surprised her just how much she had missed even the slightest touch from another person. Her fingers slid between his, offering a small squeeze in return as she settled her gaze on him. He was trying so hard, and she had to remember she wasn't the only one suffering from loss. If Cloud was gone, if Cloud was... was dead, it would hurt them all. She couldn't wallow, she had to try. Leaving all the work to Zack wasn't fair.

"Just your second?" Mission accomplished, however, as the smile returned to her face. Even a laugh managed through and she shook her head a little. "I guess it wasn't a great park." Everything below the plates of Midgar had barely reached mediocre levels, but it was all she had known and everything she had loved. It would be a lie if she said she didn't miss it, and she was terribly homesick for the church and her mother ( ... )
