This is fascinating - my earliest(and for quite a long time only) fandom was born in the zine era, and even when it moved online stayed in mailing lists for a loooong time, so the experience was very different.

The zine era? Which era is that? I loved when fandoms were on mailing lists. I love Yahoo Groups to this day. Talk about having content that's no where else on the net, it's got a lot of treasures on there! I need a hard drive and a "DOWNLOAD EVERYTHING" for all my Yahoo Groups, lol. I love it.

Do you remember Round Robin fan fictions (where each author wrote his or her own chapter)? It was SO much more fun to do through email than doing it live or doing it through contemporary social media networks. You had time to think about the story writing and didn't feel so under pressure to type something immediately. Good times!
