You know how when you watch something with someone who is in a certain profession, they have to point out all the inaccuracies relating to said profession--a nurse pointing out that the characters in the movie are failing at their CPR compressions, and that they are supposed to shock the patient's heart during fibrillation and not while flat-lining, for instance--this is what Faye has been doing with any movie taking place in space.
"See, they always do that." She sat up a little and gestured with her can of pop toward the screen, disregarding any tension this moment in the movie might have had. "That is not how gravity drives work at all."
Zelman's not really an expert on space. He knows the basics that everyone knows--there's no sound in space, driving without gravity isn't that easy, etcetera--but the rest is largely a mystery. So it's kind of interesting to glean a little insight.
"Not that I'm an expert," he sips from his soda (Coke, as usual), "but I'm pretty sure this thing was made before gravity drives were big."
"Still." She settles back with a small huff, and drains the last of her drink. "They also act like it's some big impossible deal to have a ship that can go easily back and forth between atmo flight. My zipcraft can do that."
You know she has become a huffy expert on the subject because she can, and not because she has any actual personal opinions on the topic, but she's going to live it up while she can.
"I'd like to see you on one of these ships." He laughs, but then adds, "Not because of the monster or anything, but because you'd probably have them out of there in twenty minutes. After you'd finished complaining, of course."
He reaches over for the bag of chips that are inconveniently placed on the other side of Faye. "Though, on that subject, I don't think that soldier's ever served a day in his life."
