This was starting to really freak him out. First there was that woman named Rinoa who said she knew and--yeah. Now there was a Selphie, who said she knew him and a Quistis, whom apparently should know all of them? Way too confusing. He felt like there was no way... surely he wouldn't have forgotten something big like that (taken down Ultimecia? Together? Really?) but...

Squall quickly found the library again. It was another SeeD, no matter what past they supposedly shared, and that was all that was familiar here. That meant it was welcome. There had to be something in this place, some sort of information, to fill in the numerous blanks? The brunette glanced around, trying to see if he could spot Selphie, though he was only going off the obvious hint. Not immediately doing so, Squall shrugged and moved through the rows, turning around the corner of one.

She'd show up eventually, right?

Selphie caught movement in the library out of the corner of her eye. Fluffy collar, white shirt, and scarred forehead. That was definitely Squall, and Selphie tore herself away from gazing up at the towering shelves in order to run over to him.

“Am I glad to see you!” She said upon stopping in front of him. Selphie would play along with this, game or not. Squall didn’t look like he had been beaten up or knocked upside the head, and he had said as much to her on the journal. Selphie placed her hands behind her back and swayed back and forth. “So… do I look familiar?”

It was worth a shot. And after all, who could forget her? Sure, people might forget her name, but no one could forget her energy and cute appearance! … or so she had been told.

Fiction... fiction... more fiction... Squall shook his head, wondering if they'd ever find what they were kind of-sort of looking for. Turning when he heard someone coming up, Squall blinked and replied slowly, "...Hi." Even before she asked him, he was peering earnestly into her face, the expression on his own breaking the norm by being a hesitatingly hopeful.

A large part of him willed recognition, but in the end...

...the gate crashed back down. He straightened up, face as impassive as always, though in his eyes there was a brief glint of disappointment. "No," he said. Something more seemed required so he added, "Sorry." Were we close? he wondered. Comrades? Friends? More? What? I can't... I can't remember and I'm being told I should...

"Can't see a computer terminal from here or a librarian," he said. "Guess we'll have to wing it."

"Hi," Selphie chirped in reply, waiting for the 'Haha, fooled you' line that was destined to come from Squall. Instead, she was met with a brief examination and then he was apologizing. Selphie frowned. What was the deal?

"That's okay," She said cheerfully, but she was really rather confused. Squall had really forgotten them? Their leader had forgotten them? Selphie was getting more than a little worried. But their only option at the moment was to look for answers where they might have the chance of finding them. And that happened to be the library.

Not minding the lack of a librarian, Selphie ran to the nearest bookshelf. Fiction. "What are we looking for, anyway? Information, yeah, but what kind of book? History?"

"Yeah," Squall answered. "History." He ran a gloved hand down the spines of the books, eyes following the letters. The people of this world must really like their fiction; there was all kinds here. That was good, at least.

He turned and looked up at the second level. Maybe history was up there? "Come on," he said. Assuming Selphie would follow, he lead the way, finding a flight of stairs and scaling them. He glanced back a few times over his shoulder, as if making sure she was really there.

The only reason I feel like I should know her is because she tells me I should, he thought. I don't... feel like I'm missing anything. Not--really. Defeating Ultimecia alone... that couldn't have been possible. Why would she lie? He sensed that Selphie could be persuasive as hell but there was nothing to gain from this.

Damnit. I just want to understnad.Once on the second floor, he moved to the closest shelf. Finally. Something other than fiction. It wasn't history, just nature, but it was closer than they had been before. " ( ... )

Selphie followed Squall, looking over the side of the staircase to get a better view of the library. “You know, this place kind of reminds me of Ultimecia’s castle…” she said, shuddering to show her dislike of that place, “But it’s nicer than that. No puzzles or anything yet!”

When they reached the landing she skipped over to a farther shelf, crouching to see the books on the bottom. More nature. Yet she still pulled out a book and flipped through it. Large yellow birds covered the pages, and it took Selphie a moment to realize what they were.

“Hey! Chocobos! Cute!!” She smiled… but then the smile faded into a thin line as she rose and held the book up to Squall, pointing at a picture of a mother and her chicks. “You remember these, right?”

Squall paused when he heard Selphie's comments on the place's resemblance to Ultimecia's castle. It... actually kind of was like that, wasn't it? The place was huge and...

"Mm," he grunted in vague agreement.

He stretched up to read the spines of the books on the highest shelf, refusing to grab and use one of the numerous step-stools thus look ridiculous. He could make them out and none of them were what he was looking for, anyway.

Hardly paying attention to what Selphie was going on about, it took Squall a few moments to actually turn around and see what she wanted of him. Huh...? He leaned forwards, eyeing the book. They had record of chocobos here? Odd ( ... )

"That's good!" Selphie beamed. She wondered if Quistis remembered them, too. Deciding to dig a little deeper, Selphie placed the book back and asked, "What about Ellone? Matron? Headmaster Cid? Oooh, what about Sir Laguna?"

Selphie had to admit, she felt a little weird. Like SHE was almost forgetting something. A little voice in the back of her head was telling her something. It was probably nothing. Just been talking to forgetful people too much or something or just confused from being in some new place. She was positive she wasn't forgetting anyone.

If anything, the mention of Sir Laguna should get SOME sort of reaction. Then again, Selphie thought, looking at Squall from the corner of her eye as she went over to another shelf, Squall was pretty good at hiding what he felt.

Sigh. He should have known this was coming. "Yes. Yes. Yes." A momentary but still noticeable pause. "Yes." Before he could stop, his face shifted and showed how uncomfortable he was at the subject of Laguna. Still had daddy issues, huh ( ... )

There it was! There was that uncomfortable look that he had whenever Laguna came up. Selphie nodded. "That's so weird. You remember them, but not the rest of us..." She tilted her head to the side, confused as ever.

Part of her dearly wished to hold on to the belief that this was a joke, that he wasn't sincere, but... no one could fake this. Not this realistically. For the first time in a long while, Selphie actually looked dejected. Because Squall really seemed to have lost his memories, and because the library wasn't giving any answers.

"I guess so. But it's only us. It'd take forever!" She said eyes widening slightly at the aspect of how long it might take to question people. "And I don't... well, I don't know if Quistis remembers being a SeeD. She remembers fighting, but... this is all crazy!!" Selphie suddenly slapped her hand to her forehead, almost as if checking if she had a fever.

She realized this is how Irvine must have felt when he remembered... remembered... what? Something they didn't. Selphie's face paled a little.
