There's a long period of quiet when Wash arrived, especially as he noticed the pile of books. Then he pulled his thoughts together enough to speak. "Hello, Maine."

Maine looks up sharply, perhaps a little startled, and then stands, loosing his grip on the book and just letting it fall, awkwardly. His fists clench and unclench as he's caught between emotions for a moment, finally settling on submissive as he keeps his head down. He's standing more balanced, if still bearing most of the weight on his left.

Consciously forcing himself to keep his breathing even, he's aware that he wasn't really on his best behaviour during his last conversation with Washington, and is worried he might have changed his mind about the AIs and armor.

He's tense, expectant, but he doesn't say anything.

Washington nods at that. He's frowning under the helmet. "How does the leg actually feel, Maine? It doesn't look like it's recovered as much as I'd hoped. And look at me when I'm talking to you."

He pauses, then adds, "I have kept my word. They are safe."

He'll look up, almost but not quite meeting Washington's visor, shifting his weight more evenly with just the slightest wince. His answer comes quick and panicked, "Better. It's better. It's fine."

At hearing about the AIs, Maine heaves a deep sigh, hanging his head and slumping his shoulders. Not wanting to push it any further, he'll take that news at face value.

"Without them, you are Maine. That is something, you know. Even if they might not agree." Washington sighs. Two steps forward, one step back. Damn castle.

"He wasn't enough. He was never enough." He's stopped rocking for the moment, absently nudging at a book with his foot.

"He is enough. They wanted more from you than you should have to give, Maine." Washington actually gives Maine an awkward pat on the shoulder.

Maine hunches in on himself at that, and when he speaks his voice breaks just a little, "I tried so hard."
