Itachi would be back in one week and that was all Sasuke could think about ever since he awoke from the battle. Even in death, Itachi had become his obsession. Even if Sasuke succeeded in killing him every time, he would always wait for his arrival, wait for another chance to kill him ( ... )

His head had never been so full with dilemmas and conflicting thoughts as they were tonight. It was strange. This place had affected him far more than just through revealing his secret to hundreds of judging strangers. No, even before that incident he could feel himself growing weaker, less determined, and more accepting of the consequences of daily life in Paradisa. It wasn’t right! This wasn’t what he was supposed to be like. Before this Sasuke had even arrived he acted like it wasn’t worth trying to rebuild anything with him because there was no Konoha. Even Naruto could not believe it once Sasuke was gone again and only thanked the place endlessly when he returned. It had been a big wake up call ( ... )

It would be so easy to ignore him; in fact, he was able to do it before, apparently. He had read his old journal entries, finding that his previous self was able to avoid all contact with anyone by… doing nothing at all. Although that approach was effective, it was also unnecessary. Sasuke could easily avoid people without having to lock himself up in his room ( ... )

The sarcastic comment made a part of Naruto want to scream something just as clever back to him, but it also made the more rational side of Naruto squirm and relax, knowing Sasuke actually just talked to him. Normally. It was his arbitrarily nostalgic comments every now and then that helped Naruto gain more hope that there was still some of the old Sasuke hiding deep down beneath that cold and hard exterior. He knew his friend was still there, maybe too scared to come out, scared of winding up beaten and broken and alone in the end without ever completing his lifelong revenge. Even when they were younger and on friendlier terms, Sasuke acted like he always had to be the tough guy, the one who saved the day when people least expected it yet did expect it because it was Sasuke and no one else was reliable enough, least of all Naruto ( ... )

For once, Naruto actually didn’t know what to say. What did Sasuke want from him at this point? He knew the strange pain Sasuke was currently experiencing but… did that mean he also realized it was time to come back? Or at least talk civilly again? Did he even want to? Did he have a choice either way?

Giving a slightly impatient sigh to break the silence, Naruto finally glanced over to him, his pale face standing out in the dark. “Ducks don’t feel the same things humans are forced to.” It was a vague answer, but true.
