Sephiroth had been waiting by the tank, basking in her glow.

It was an effigy, of course; a plastic replica that he'd asked the castle for, but it inspired him as nothing else could. Her tank, bathed in blue-green light, winked and bubbled; the metal plate across her forehead read "JENOVA;" a metallic figurehead hung by tubes half-destroyed from the front of the tank.

When Loz knocked he shoved off his bed and limped to the door. He was still very damaged from his fight with Yukimura, but he couldn't show it in front of the remnants, so he'd carefully dressed to hide the bandages, and when he opened the door, he made sure to stand up straight.

"Loz," he said, smiling uncharacteristically. He gestured to the room. "Come in and meet your Mother."

Loz had been smirking - his usual, twisted, half-smirk he did when he was really excited - when Sephiroth opened the door but the words hit him in the face rather hard. "Mother's here?" He looked up at his elegant older brother. Mother was here? But wasn't she happy back at home?

Loz looked over at the glowing tank. Was that Mother? Loz didn't quite understand. From what he'd heard about other mothers, Loz had expected Mother to look like him ~ long silver hair, an elegant build like his other brothers, green eyes ~ but this one didn't look anything like him. She was blue and had, was that organs?, in odd places.

"Mother?" Blatant confusion spread across his face; Loz was never good at hiding emotions. The secret would soon be out that Loz had been robbed of his memories of Mother.

"It isn't really her, of course," murmured Sephiroth, moving slowly up to the tank to disguise his limp, "but it looks exactly like her."

He placed one hand on the tank and pretended that he could feel the cool glass; leaned his head against it and felt her pulse in his own heartbeat. "This is only temporary. Until we get back to her."

Loz didn't get it. "It's her but not her?" Loz thought aloud. He was still stuck on the part about his mother not looking like him. Was she even human? Wait, if she wasn't, that meant he's not human either? Now he was incredibly confused.

But he decided to copy Sephiroth and put his hand on the tank. It felt alive and there was a heartbeat just like his own. How could that be? Loz quickly withdrew it, almost in fear as much as confusion. He was afraid of what was going on; of confessing to Sephiroth that the castle took his memories of Mother. His face was distorted by distress and confusion and there was nothing for Loz to do to hide the power of such a strong emotion.

For Sephiroth it was all perfectly natural; he thought Loz should fear his Mother, just like he should fear and respect Sephiroth, for they were both powerful.

That last thought stirred something in him that protested, and he shuddered without knowing why.

"You haven't seen her like this before," he said, glancing at Loz, "have you? Whole. Glorious."
