We tend to call it Craft, but magic is woven into everything in my world. We--or well, the Blood, at least--use it for nearly everything we do, from simple tasks to complex ones.
As for rules...everything has a price. Using Craft takes energy. The stronger one is, the darker one's Jewels, the further one can drop into the Abyss of power we draw from--the more powerful one's Craft, but also the more energy we burn. We can use it up more quickly, depleting ourselves if we're not careful to take care.
The Jewels contain the reservoir of our power and are a signal of our strength. We're given our first Jewel at our Birthright Ceremony, and then when we make our Offering to Darkness when we reach adulthood, we can descend up to three levels deeper to a darker Jewel. Not everyone does, but if you've studied your Craft and worked at it, most do.
Oh! Me! Yep. All kinds of crazy magic where I'm from-- you even think of speaking Latin in front of the wrong kind of book and-- poof! You got yourself an indoor fire. My best friend is in fact a very powerful witch. I can't say I know a lot about the technicalities of how it works, but from what she's told me, it has to do with being in tune with the forces of nature and concentration.
Oh, and knowing the spells always comes in handy too.
[delighted] I would be pleased to tell you all that I know, Doctor.
I am, as you know, a wizard. In my world, one can create, transfigure, vanish, charm, do spells and much more by the use of magic. The magic we do is restricted, mainly, by the Five Principal Exceptions to Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration, and on a wider scale, the Statue of Secrecy.
Yes. After 1692, it was decided that it would be better if the Muggles -- non magical peoples -- did not know of our existence. Memories were erased, hidden communities were established, and we eventually faded from memory and knowledge, dismissed as fairy tales.
So it's regulated just like any other power... Interesting! I take it the scientists in your world are equally versed in magic, and that it acts just like any other natural law?

The Statute of Secrecy? I'm assuming that means you have to keep magic hidden, then?
