Entrée de Journal Soixante-Quatre: Bad Faith

[Draco lounges outside a cafe in Paris, currently working as a translator for Beckett. Well he's supposed to be, currently he's sipping on a fresh cup of coffee and watching people walk by]

How can so few people speak french? I've never met so many ill educated people in my life. I mean it's hardly mandarin is it? It's the same bloody alphabet.

It would depend on where you live and what you do, would it not? In many parts of the United States, French is of little value, and Spanish is highly prized. Not speaking one language hardly makes one "ill-educated".

[But Molotov is a spy and speaks about ten languages fluently, so.]

Oh please, french is far more elegant than spanish. Besides people should know more than two. Most of them probably can't even speak a word of Latin either.

Usefulness outweighs elegance unless you are such a bourgeois elitist that you do not actually have to utilize your skills to get by. French, on the whole, ranks lower on the scale of usefulness than Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic and Russian. And Latin is a dead language -- why would anyone but historians, lawyers and Catholics need it?

Besides, Italian is far more elegant than French.

What are you blathering about, I use latin every day. Most of my spells are in latin and my great uncle would speak in nothing but latin. I would hardly call that a dead language.

Hardly, French is far superior. Italian is about passion, french about refinement and elegance.

Besides I wasn't saying people shouldn't learn italian, more that they should know french at the very least.

[alsdgha] I-I'm sorry... it's not a language that exists in my world.

[ What's this? Someone else making Colette feel bad? Not happening. ]

Don't worry, Colette, we can take a French class together. It will be trés bien. Right? Did I get that right?

[a...w....]

Yes, that sounds right! I've been hearing that a lot... Do you think we'd be able to learn a whole language in a week?

Oh...uh, well, I dropped out of school so I never really got the chance to learn it.

[lmao this is probably the worst thing he could say in response ;sdfgjgsn]

...

You dropped out of school. Was your life in danger or were you just lazy?

fatedtobehated December 20 2011, 21:15:49 UTC
Um...neither?

Circumstances...kind've forced me to.

You were forced?

Your high breeding is showing, darling.

You know as well as me at least half these people don't even have this language on their world, and most people don't require a language they're not likely to encounter. I'm not sure how common travel is back on Earth, but back in my world most people in my city didn't even speak their own language that well. And forget about them affording a tutor to teach them anything else.

How can you not afford an education? Also I find it hard to believe they can't even speak their own language.

Draco, that is a bit uncharitable.

[He loves you too, but even he has to go - *eyebrow arch* - over that.]

Not really, people should educate themselves.

And yet, Draco, you forget to consider circumstances. I certainly do not speak French, but then, there is no 'France' in mine own world.

I suppose...but if there were one I imagine you'd learn.
