[Written.]Since my arrival to Paradisa, I have encountered a number of people that contradict my prior belief in certain species being purely of the fictional realm. But I still maintain that there is a rational explanation for even the most inconceivable of species. But there are some concepts I refuse to believe in ( Read more... )

[Oh, Brennan, you keep trying, it's so cute.]

You don't know everything, love. And this area's one where you're completely clueless.

My career involves the study of the dead. I am very familiar with the latest research to come out of forensic, osteological, and medical journals before my arrival here.

And I've been dead for a century. I'm sure you're brilliant at science and stuff, but that just doesn't cover everything. Doesn't cover me, doesn't cover my friends.

You can't be dead, Spike.

People are dying, Dr. Temperance.

Something I am well aware of and condone. But as so much as stopping those behind the murders is important, so is factual knowledge. So long as victims are castle inhabitants, I cannot be of any use in the investigation. The rapid rate of decomposition makes it impossible to do a thorough study of the bones.

What I can do is educate the public with proper scientific knowledge in hopes that it will be of some assistance.

I agree.

Have you been keeping safe during all of this, Nudge?

"Magic is just science we don't understand yet." Although, I am generally inclined to agree with you.

Magic is an easy and dismissive way to explain scientific phenomena.

Yeah, but ... doesn't the presence of otherworldly beings make it pretty clear that the laws of life, death, and supernatural physics change from dimension to dimension? I mean ... lookit people like Hellboy. You'd never see someone like that where you're from, but here he is! And it's not outside of the realm of possibility at all that different scientific laws are either active or null and void dependent on their home dimension.

I'm not knockin' your forensic knowledge at all - I mean, really, it's impressive as hell - but in a place like this, you gotta keep your mind open to new modes of study and the addition of other sets of rules and laws ... there's a lot of cross-integration going on here, and if we can't find a way to adapt our thought processes to work around or with it ... we're gonna hit an awful lotta brick walls, and that's no help to anyone at all. Not to mention, it's just plain stressful.

[Keeping her mind open. See, now, that's really the big problem with all of this.]

I am still not ready to acquiesce to the existence of ghosts. And I do not know who Hellboy is. Regardless, the presence of varying species from varying dimensions does not dismiss the notion of certain multiversal constants.

The cycle of life and death is an as integral and consistent part of universe as gravity.

Well, yeah, it is a constant, but... didja ever consider that from dimension to dimension, it could have different parts? A VW Bug and a Yugo are both still cars, right?

truthin_bones June 15 2011, 14:13:59 UTC
The basic components of both cars still possess similar structure and purpose. And the ultimate function of both vehicles remains identical: to transport the driver from one point to another.

[ You've caught her curiosity with your theories, Temperance. They're good theories in theory, but you're missing some things ]

And what do your theories say relating to bats? Or the lack of a heartbeat.

Reply

It is entirely possible that these species which lack heartbeats have instead developed an alternative system of gas and nutrient transport. The heart's main purpose is to serve as a motor to the circulatory system. So long as the body continues to provide the necessary resources to cells for metabolic functions, I would hypothesize that an organism can survive.

But I am not sure how bats are relevant.

You mentioned vampire lore. Bats are linked with vampires.

A superstitious notion at the most.

The bite of the vampire bat left two piercings on a person, much like the bite of a vampire is conceived to look like.
