[She goes quiet at that, still keeping her distance, and then shakes her head.] I have things to do, Washington. Time intensive projects. I have a Falcon to construct. I [don't know how] don't have time for this.
[Kat just watches Wash and little Carter for a few moments, expressionless. It's not that she didn't like the kid, but where other residents might find themselves with latent maternal instincts, Kat was left with mass confusion and an overwhelming feeling of what the ever-loving hell am I supposed to do here.]
[She lets Wash answer the kid, setting her jaw at the truth of it, and then turns stiffly and heads towards the bathroom.]
I'm going to take a shower.
[Somehow, the word 'mommy' applied to her was an insanely alien concept and she needed space and time to let it sink in.]
[She's in there for a while, and when she finally emerges from the bathroom fully dressed, having wished up civvies while she was in there, her expression hasn't changed much.]
I need to cut my hair, it's getting too long. [While true, the comment itself plays more a distraction than anything. She's still watching them as she finishes towelling off her head, still keeping her distance.]
[Somehow that just frustrates her more, and she scowls without comment as she tosses the towel aside. She grabs a chair and joins them, a little closer if not immediately in their shared space yet. She sits, leaning forward and just watching Carter, intently, as if she could somehow figure out what to do by studying him.]
[She just glances up at him] I still think the castle made a very big mistake.
[It's a moment before she looks down at Carter at that, still not at all used to associating herself with that word.] Hi. [A little pause, so awkward.] Carter.
[She looks at his art, frowning. They didn't make any sense.] What is that supposed to be?

Project that can wait. He'll only be here for a week, Kat. And really, tell the truth. You don't know what to do.

[Carter's lip begins to quiver.] Don't you like me, Mommy?
Reply
[Going to pick Carter up now.] No, Carter. She likes you. Mommy is just going through some difficult times right now.

A tree. [Not that it looks much like one...]

[She frowns deeper at that.] Trees aren't blue.

It's interesting looking at least.
