It gets really suspicious when all these people we meet conveniently can't tell us something. Why weren't they able to? That and the First Gens want to keep us out of the Dead Zone -- actively getting involved with us contradicts that, and if they ever wanted to see us in a crisis situation, they have journals to watch every one of them. It doesn't really match up.
And that said, most of the items are fairly useless. I have one; it's actually pretty counterproductive.
If we had more information, we could help them, especially if they have cause to worry about incurring wrath from the people they live beside.
[Ponder, ponder.]
That's what I don't understand. There are obviously puzzle pieces missing in all this, namely the ones that answer all the biggest questions: if they're fine living out there, why wouldn't we? If the castle's so bad, why do they hang out so close to the border? Aren't we all prisoners of Paradisa just the same, regardless of how long we've been here? It's like they're drawing a lot of imaginary lines between us but there's no discernible reason why.
She told me she knew quite a bit about this world, which seemed to imply she'd been here awhile, though she said it hadn't been as long as some of the other people living here. She has some kind of loss, because she was asking about how peoples' losses changed around here.
She also told me they consider themselves 'neutrals' if such a thing exists around here. But she talked about the castle as 'that horrid structure' and made it clear none of them have any love for it, and that they fear its influence over the area. That probably explains why they risk being so close to the Dead Zone. And she did ask about whether the Iron Suits had been spotted around recently, which could be out of concern for themselves.

Well, that's some rather interesting information. Could you clarify for me, though, if the person behind these so-called tests would be, by those criteria, a resident or a Paradisa native?

[Guy takes a deep breath.]
Hello again. When last we met, the castle had turned me into a wolf and left me to "speak," as it were, like a complete idiot. My apologies for the annoyance. I daresay it was no fun for me, either...
[He then peers down at his journal.]
Are we certain these strange... devices can be trusted? If there is indeed a spy among us, they could easily glean information about us via the journals - perhaps even use them to manipulate us. Do you think it's possible that they could've found a way around our privacy controls, allowing them to read the very things we wish to keep secret?
[Guy thinks back to how Robin Hood managed to rob a seemingly impenetrable strong room, right from under their noses. Arrow traps, illusions, molten lead - nothing had stopped the wily outlaw from robbing them of their treasure. He cracks a grin.] Sorry for the sudden paranoia. It's just been my experience that nothing is truly secure. There's always a way in, if one wants it bad enough...
Actually, we can't really be certain of that at all. In fact, if this castle is controlled by somebody or something, it seems likely that person or thing would be able to read anything we write, regardless of filters, since they gave us the things in the first place. So maybe there is a way around.

That's what I was afraid of. The journals are our main line of communication, and communication lines are usually monitored. It's one of the oldest tricks in the book: find out what your enemy is saying, and then use that information against them. If someone unfriendly were able to access all of our private entries, they could learn everything from the way we react to stressful situations to our skills and our weaknesses. If that knowledge were used against us, we'd never stand a chance.
And, you said yourself: your contact had a journal...
[He sighs. Spies in the castle. Here I go again, he thinks, cracking a smile and remembering how Robin Hood had employed Marian as his spy in Nottingham castle, and how he himself had employed Allan A'Dale as a spy in Robin's gang. Even in this strange place filled with magic and strange technologies, nothing had changed...]
There is one thing I do not understand, though. How did we become enemies with people we know very little about?
I'm not sure whoever put us here thinks of us as enemies. We've got a few theories on why we're here, but the castle or whoever designed it hating us doesn't seem like a very plausible one.
As for this splinter group, though, they probably are afraid we're under the sway of the castle. That's why some of the First Gens are suspicious of us, after all. They think living here makes us more susceptible to its influence.
...Ah. On that front, I... have two; one I took myself, and one that belonged to my wife... but I'm most concerned about the populous at large. I'm sure some of the residents who took an item might not be prepared to defend themselves, even if it wasn't against some sort of monster...

There's gotta be something we're missing about them.

I wonder if they meant the alien that lives in the insolitus...

And, ah-- about the items from the Insolitus... I'm a little uneasy...
Has anyone been targeted already?

I think 'not very pleasant' is swinging way over onto the understatement side of things.
Uneasy because you have one, or is this a general kind of unease?
Not sure yet. That's one reason I thought I'd put this out there. My source told me they saw the creature going after someone else, I think.

I'm not sure how wise it is for people to hang on to them, especially considering that they're all pretty much worthless.
